🍦Pickleball at Annapolis Mall

Annapolis Blues host playoffs, $83k raised for Ukrainian refugees, Excavations...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Anyone else seeing the new Mission Impossible tonight?

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Flag policy up for vote at Board of Education meeting

  • 8 new pickleball courts

  • The book of the summer (written right here in Annapolis)

Let’s get to it.

—Ryan Sneddon

Naptown Scoop Turns Three

Every year that Naptown Scoop doesn’t run out of money and shut down, we have a party. It’s worth celebrating. About 600,000 businesses fail or close every year.

But we don’t just celebrate not failing. We also give back. So we choose a nonprofit every year and donate proceeds from ticket sales and amazing sponsors like our title sponsor, Brad Kappel. This year we’ve chosen Charting Careers, a local nonprofit breaking the cycle of poverty one kid at a time.

Naptown Scoop’s third anniversary party is August 18 at 6:30. We have about 50 tickets left and we’d love if it you joined us.

THE DIGEST

🇺🇦 $83k raised for Ukrainian refugees

For seven weeks, 193 pieces of Ludmila Pawlowska’s art adorned the walls of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church (the one with the cool dog on Spa Road). Over 1,000 people experienced the powerful exhibit over those 7 weeks. And through donations and selling 33 pieces, St. Martin’s raised $83,000 to support Ukrainian refugees.

Excavations: Available now

Grab this book before you head to the beach. I’m only 25 pages in and it is a hoot! 🦉 Excavations is born-and-raised Annapolitan Kate Myers’ first novel and I have a feeling it won’t be her last. You can get Excavations pretty much anywhere books are sold but I recommend one of our local bookstores (like Old Fox or Park Books). And if you want a signed copy but missed Saturday’s launch, don’t fret. Even though Kate’s on a national book tour, she didn’t leave Annapolis out. Au contraire, she’s got 3 more events here this summer!

The end of Annapolis Go

As proved by Ted Lasso, McDonald’s chicken snack wraps, and the short but sweet time I was an only child, all good things come to an end. Now that the Hillman Garage is open again, Annapolis is putting Annapolis Go out to pasture. The transportation department is reviewing bids to relaunch a ride-share program in early fall but for now, your last day for uber-cheap rides (lowercase intentional) is July 17.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Now open: Ball at the Mall

Even though Annapolis has leaned hard into pickleball, we still don’t have enough courts. Hopefully, that gets a little better this week. Ball at the Mall is opening for business. That’s right, there are now 8 regulation pickleball courts at Annapolis Mall. Ball at the Mall is a membership facility with an easy online court reservation system, tons of parking, and soon . . . lights. Click here to learn more about membership.

⚽ Annapolis Blues close regular season with a loss. Playoffs this week

The Annapolis Blues lost their final game of the regular season last night 2–1 to the Alexandria Reds. Blame the rain 🤷. But much like my final exams senior year couldn’t change my letter grades, it doesn’t change the Blues’ playoff outlook because they had already clinched the conference.

Winning the conference means the Blues get home field advantage in the playoffs. The first game is this Wednesday at 7 PM against Grove United. Season seat solders have already received their tickets via email. Individual tickets are available from $8.
