THE DIGEST
Oyster Feature: Boatyard Bar & Grill – The Local Hangout
Have you ever heard the Old Wives’ tale that you should only eat oysters in months that end with ‘R’? Once upon a time, this wisdom may have prevented people from getting sick, but through the miracle of refrigeration, oysters are now good-to-gulp year-round.
Perhaps that’s why the Oyster Recovery Partnership scheduled National Oyster Week for A-U-G-U-S-T (no R!) 5–11.
For today’s oyster feature, we went to Boatyard Bar & Grill, an Eastport dining staple since 2001. We got a half dozen Patty’s Fattys, which are sourced literally right down the road from Wild Country Seafood. The oysters were plump, cold, and oh-so-fresh. And we love how easy Boatyard makes it to customize these babies – served with lemon, cocktail sauce, and mignonette. There’s even hot sauce and Old Bay right on the table. And Boatyard recycles all its oyster shells.
How else can you get oysters at Boatyard? Antoine’s Stuffed Oysters Rock, on the Seafood Tower, oyster shooters 4 ways, and there are always oysters on specials menu! 🦪
Polar Bear Plunge: Registration now open 🐻❄️
You know what sounds nice on these 100-degree days? Jumping into freezing water. Believe it or not, we have exactly that . . . but not til next year.
Registration is now open for Polar Bear Plunge on February 1, 2025 at Sandy Point State Park. This is a big Maryland tradition and a huge fundraiser for Special Olympics Maryland — so if you’re hitting people up for donations, just remind them that you’ll be jumping into the bay in February.
Crab Feast Distribution Grants 🦀 💸
Last week The Rotary Club of Annapolis hosted “the world’s largest crab feast.” And the local service club is wasting no time. They’re already accepting applications for grants from the funds raised. In the past, the club has supported causes for social reform, health care, environment, and arts. Grants must fund specific projects (not operating expenses), improve the quality of life in Annapolis, and benefit as many people as possible.
Only 501(c)(3) organizations can apply, and they must include an IRS determination letter. Grants up to $4,000 are available. Apply online at www.annapolisrotary.org/application or mail to Rotary Club of Annapolis by 5 PM on October 1. The club will announce recipients in early 2025.
Have pickleball net, will travel 🏓
Pickleball has become a pretty big dill lately, and one local teen is striving to make it easier to take nets on the go. Taylor Jarvis, who grew up in Severna Park and learned to play pickleball in the area, recently launched the Shockwave Pickleball Net. It has a patent-pending design that makes it easy to unfold and set up in only a few seconds. Taylor, who collaborated on the design with his dad, expects the net to be available by October. The Last Days of the Schooner America 📖 ⛵️
Today marks the official release of The Last Days of the Schooner America: A Lost Icon at the Annapolis Warship Factory. Annapolis native, sailor, author, and Scoop office neighbor David Gendell details the colorful, checkered career of America, the iconic 1851 schooner, namesake of the America’s Cup.
The schooner’s story is set against the rise of the Annapolis Yacht Yard as it transformed into a World War II production juggernaut, producing over 100 wooden warships for the United States Navy and its allies. Much of the book – which includes 78 images and maps – is set in Eastport during the war years.
Annapolis sailing legend Gary Jobson wrote the book's foreword. Strong pre-orders already made it the #1 New Release position in Amazon's "Maritime History and Piracy" category. Hardcover or digital copies are available on Amazon.
200K Diaper Donation 👶
Did you know the average baby goes through 3,000 diapers in its first year? (Parents – I know you know.) So the donation of 200,000 diapers that Huggies and the National Diaper Bank recently donated to the Walk the Walk Foundation is a big deal!
The donation is especially significant because needs are higher than ever before — Walk the Walk distributed 250K diapers in 2023, which marked a 50% increase from the year before. Executive Director Nicole Dolan says this donation will help the foundation support a record number of families in 2024.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’
Theater Tuesday
CTM presents The Miser
Classic theater feels a lot more approachable (and delicious) when it’s performed in the outdoor courtyard at Reynolds Tavern, as Classic Theatre of Maryland does every year. This time around it’s The Miser, Moliere’s comedy about a nasty miser and his household trying to get one over on him. See it tonight at 7:30 PM or any Tuesday throughout August (except August 20).
ASGT presents Big Fish
The tall tales of traveling salesman Edward Bloom come to life onstage at Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre with its final show of the season, Big Fish. This musical adaptation runs through September 1.
TMC presents Oklahoma
Oh, what a beautiful mornin’ to order your tickets for Talent Machine Company’s youth show, Oklahoma. This classic opens next weekend, August 16–18, and runs through August 25.
Whatcha doin’ August 16?
We’d love it if you’d pop on over to the Annapolis Maritime Museum with us to celebrate 4 years of these silly little emails. Every year we have this little party to celebrate another year of Naptown Scoop not running out of money. And despite my best efforts, we haven’t (yet) so we’re celebrating again. All kidding aside, we host this party to connect our amazing readers and it’s one of our favorite nights of the year. Everyone’s invited but tickets are limited. Grab yours before it’s too late! The party is August 16 from 6:30–9:30 PM.
Nothing in this section is sponsored. They're just the things you need to know. I'll always let you know when something's sponsored.
