THE DIGEST

Class of 2028 caps Herndon in 2:27:31

Photo: Kimmy Stevenson

You know what they say. If at first you don’t succeed, climb up the sweaty, greasy, wet human pyramid and try again. Nearly 2.5 hours into yesterday’s Herndon Climb, Augustus “Gus” Russo approached the top of the Herndon Monument, ready for glory and chants of “Plebes no more!” Instead, he took a spectacular fall into the mids below. But Gus doesn’t seem like a guy who gives up.

And about five minutes later, he was atop the monument again. He made no mistakes this time, easily removing the plebe dixie cup hat and replacing it with a midshipmen’s cover. The final task of plebe year took them 2 hours, 27 minutes, and 31 seconds which is on pace with the previous two classes. Congratulations, Class of 2028, and enjoy your summer. Plebes no more!

Arundel High Wins 2025 AACPS Envirothon 🌱

Arundel High School Team 1 recently earned tree-mendous honors — winning the 2025 AACPS Envirothon! With 435 out of 500 points, their team took the top spot in three of four categories during the academic competition. Seventeen teams from seven AACPS schools dug deep into forestry, soils, aquatic ecology, wildlife, and more.

Next stop: the Maryland State Envirothon, where Arundel’s team (featuring Asima Abdul-Marteen, Peter Kim, Connor Ray-Dulany, Lance Stribley, and Lillyanna Tussing) will represent Anne Arundel County on June 11–12 at the Western Maryland 4-H Center in Swanton.

Two AACPS Students Move On to National History Day Competition

We love reporting on brilliant young people. AACPS students Jackson Rubin and Alma Neghedi have both qualified to participate in the National History Day competition held at the University of Maryland next month. Rubin, a ninth grader, won accolades for his paper, “The Violation of Rights During the Indian Child Welfare Crisis and in Indian Boarding Schools.” And Neghedi was recognized for her documentary, “Many Called Salvageable: Crownsville State Hospital and America's Struggle with Race and Mental Health.” The national competition is a weeklong event where they’ll compete against students from across the country. Good luck, Jackson and Alma!

And Annapolis Town Center is bringing more than 50 of them together every month throughout the spring, summer, and fall. The first Anchors & Artisans is this Sunday from 11 AM – 4 PM. Stop by for live music, family-friendly activities, food, and (of course!) shopping. Upcoming dates include June 22, July 27, August 24, September 28, and October 26.
