150 years of the Thomas Point Lighthouse, Annapolis Running Festival, judge dismisses climate lawsuits...
TOGETHER WITH
Good morning, Annapolis. A pair of silver canns once owned by William Paca just sold at auction for $42,000. Whatâs a cann? Basically a cup used for ale or wine. The word was commonly used in Europe way back in the day.
In todayâs Naptown Scoop:
150 years of the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse
Annapolis Running Festival
Judge dismisses climate suits
Letâs get to it.

THE DIGEST
A beautiful tribute to Pete Medhurst
The Scoop team (and many many others) are currently grieving the loss of Pete Medhurst. His close friend and colleague, Bill Wagner, wrote a touching tribute about the âVoice of Navy Athletics,â who recently died of brain cancer at age 55. Bill and Pete hosted 2 seasons of our Anchors Aweigh Podcast together, but their bond began long before.
Many colleagues consider Pete one of the best play-by-play announcers theyâve ever worked with. And if he wasnât the best, he was certainly the most dedicated. Pete worked 240 consecutive Navy football games from the sideline or booth before cancer ended his streak. The 1987 graduate of Southern High also broadcast Navy basketball, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, diving, baseball, volleyball, and wrestling.
Anyone with a dream will love Peteâs hustle. From humble beginnings to one of Marylandâs most beloved broadcasters, he sure built a career to remember. ($)
Judge dismisses climate change suits đ
Last week, Anne Arundel Circuit Court Judge Steven Platt dismissed climate change damage claims by Annapolis and Anne Arundel County against major energy companies. The lawsuits alleged the companies misled the public about fossil fuels' environmental impact and sought accountability for climate catastrophes like flooding and sea level rise.
Theodore J. Boutrous, Jr., who represented Chevron said: âthese types of claims are precluded and preempted by federal law and must be dismissed under clear U.S. Supreme Court precedent.â
Whatâs next? Annapolis hasnât decided whether to appeal or refile in a new jurisdiction. Anne Arundel County plans to appeal. ($)

LOCAL BUSINESS
Preserve Makes Washingtonianâs Top 100 Restaurant List
We love it when lilâ old Annapolis gets noticed by the DC foodies. Washingtonian Magazine recently listed their top 100 restaurants in the DMV, and Preserve, located on Main Street right here in DTA, made the cut. Locals know the best seat is at the bar, where servers will tell you whatâs hot today. But the magazine makes a good point: that three-course prix fixe meal is a great deal. Anyone hungry?
Reader Recommendations: One Physical Therapy and Fitness
â10 years ago I was looking for a personal trainer. I interviewed professionals at several gyms including Jennifer Balducci at ONE. Jennifer was above and beyond the most interested and experienced in creating a plan for me to reach my goals, while keeping some health issues in mind. Over the years I've participated in Barre and Mat Pilates classes at ONE. I've also taken Pilates Reformer classes with Christina Thomas. Jennifer is my go-to physical therapist and always has helpful health/lifestyle tips that keep me functioning at my best. ONE also sends an informative newsletter monthly which I read from beginning to end. I highly recommend ONE to anyone looking for a top-notch team to provide physical therapy, fitness, and wellness.â
â Joanne Rennie
Jennifer Balducci founded One Physical Therapy and Fitness to offer a mix of physical therapy and fun classes like Pilates and Barre, all with a focus on helping you feel your best.

Celebrate 150 Years of the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse
Itâs an icon on the Chesapeake. Just as much as blue crabs and skipjacks. And this Thursday, Annapolisâ favorite lighthouse is the subject of the Annapolis Maritime Museumâs Winter Lecture Series. Think a lighthouse canât be interesting? Think again. A lot can happen in 150 years â like the grounding of a British warship. Lighthouse Manager John Potvin is the speaker this Thursday at AMM from 7:30â8:30 PM. Register here (recommended). And may we suggest walking over to Davisâ Pub for a nightcap after the lecture?
đ Colonial Players announces auditions for Bump
How is taking a cork out of a bottle similar to delivering a baby? đ¤ If thatâs got your attention, maybe consider auditioning for Bump with the Colonial Players. Itâs a heartfelt, comedic exploration of pregnancy, invention, and human connection across generations. It interweaves stories of expectant mothers, inventive solutions, and the support of an online community. Auditions are open to all on Sunday, February 9 from 1â4 PM and Monday, February 10 from 7â10 PM. Get info.
Save the date: Annapolis Running Festival đ
Thereâs still time to train for the Annapolis Running Festival! The third annual installment of this growing event is set for March 22, and just like past years, it includes half-marathon, 10K, and 5K options. Youâll start the race from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and run your chosen distance through downtown Annapolis. But if youâre reluctant to lace up your shoes and connect with your competitive side, consider this:
đĽ The race comes with great swag. You get a premium race shirt plus a cool medal when you finish.
đĽ Both the 10K and half-marathon routes cross the Naval Academy Bridge, so you get to see Scoopâs favorite sunrise.
đĽ Because itâs in late March (and weâre all lookinâ forward to spring), the afterparty includes a fire pit for sock burning. Now thatâs authentic.
Whether youâre a serious competitive runner or hanging on to your New Yearâs Resolutions for dear life, this is a great local race. Register.
