Brad Kappel key and anchor logo

Good morning, Annapolis. Did you know that just like Netflix, Naptown Scoop comes with a “skip intro” button? It’s called scrolling past this.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Lothian grain elevator

  • Annapolis Sailboat Show guide (and giveaway)

  • Ineligible soccer player at South River HS

Let’s get to it.

Annapolis Hope gets a website

In the wake of last night’s kickoff, we’re excited to announce a dedicated Annapolis Hope website. It’s nothing special; I can say that because I made it. But it has the background on what we’re doing, how you can help, and a daily updated donation tracker.

It’s also one more place we get to recognize our generous donors. Speaking of. . . we want to recognize Julie St. Marie Catering as the first non-anonymous donation for the $10k matching campaign. Go see them in the VIP tent at the Annapolis Sailboat Show this week!

If you missed that match, you can learn more about it on the brand new Annapolis Hope website.

We’d also like to thank the following restaurants and businesses for donating everything needed for the kickoff last night: Graze By the Bay, El Cabrito, Light House Bistro, Mi Lindo Cancun, Bell Annapolis, La Sierra, Señor Chiles, Sin Fronteras, El Rinconcito, Rincon Latino, Sweet Cream – Home Bakery, It Taste Like Happy, Westin Annapolis, Jalapeños, Bay Ridge Liquors, Forward Brewing, and Caliente Grill.

The best lot on the Severn

Brad Kappel always has the best listings. But even at the top, all homes are not created equal.

205 Winchester Beach Drive is the best lot I’ve ever seen on the Severn River.

Its commanding location has 270° views all the way down to Sherwood Forest and all the way out to the beautiful Bay.

The 6,911 square foot, 5 bedroom, 5.5 bathroom home constructed by Joy Custom Design Build, is the cherry on top.

This is one of a kind in Annapolis. Contact Brad Kappel for your private tour today.

THE DIGEST

🎃 Pumpkin paradise

It takes 90-120 days to grow. . . then you mutilate its guts, stab holes in it, and let it rot on your porch until squirrels eat it. Ah, the sacred life cycle of the pumpkin.

Still need to grab one? Every day in October, Friends of the Light House hosts a pumpkin patch at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church. The pumpkins are grown on Kent Island and proceeds benefit The Light House. Open on weekdays 2–6 PM and weekends 10 AM–6 PM. 1120 Spa Rd, Annapolis, MD 21403.

  • Shout-out to the Navy women's basketball team who is volunteering at the pumpkin patch this Sunday (10/15)!

Teamwork makes the grant work

This is living proof that a little goes a long way. Impact100 of the Greater Chesapeake challenges local women to write a $1,000 check for a local nonprofit. This year they raised $90,000 and just announced three finalists for their sixth annual grant:

  • Friends of Eastport Volunteer Fire Company

  • Children’s Theatre of Annapolis

  • Annapolis Symphony Academy

What’s next? The group will collectively decide the finalist this weekend.

Lothian grain elevator reopens

Back in March, Anne Arundel County bought a grain elevator from Perdue. That $1.25 million purchase kept it from closing (and saved a big headache for local farmers). This week, the elevator is up and running thanks to a public-private partnership with Warfield Brothers who have been farming in Howard County for over 60 years. Just in time for the fall harvest!

🤔 Do grain elevators skip the 13th floor too?

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Annapolis Sailboat Show

Downtown has been abuzz setting up for what is arguably the biggest (and unarguably the best) sailboat show in the world. Scoop loves a boat show so you know we’re excited. We even wrote a handy dandy guide to help you out.

Oh, and we want to send 2 of you to the show for free.

Just like last week, all you have to do is donate at least $5 to Annapolis Hope. Make the donation, reply to this email with your receipt, and you’re in! We’ll pick 2 random winners (2 tickets each) Thursday at noon.

Preview Day is Thursday. General Admission is Friday–Sunday.

UPDATED: Comprehensive Fall Activity Guide

Remember that big 🍑 list of fall activities we published last week? Well, we’re publishing it again. This time as a blog post so you can reference it more easily. We’ve also added some new things and will continue to do so as we hear about more fun stuff. Check it out!

Carnival at Westfield Annapolis 🎡

It’s time for food you shouldn’t eat, rides you don’t trust, and games you can’t win. Yep, those are the unspoken rules of the carnival. And really, would you want it any other way?

The carnival opens tonight and runs through October 22 at Westfield Annapolis. There are rides, games, and food for the whole family. Find it in the former Sears parking lot (or just follow the screams):

  • Dates: Monday through Friday 5–11 PM | Saturday 1–11 PM | Sunday 3–11 PM

  • Ride tix: 1 ticket $1.75 | 30 tickets $40 | 50 tickets $60

  • Ball out: Unlimited rides (with wristband purchase) are $27 Monday–Thursday and $30 Friday–Sunday

Thumb injury knocks down Blake Horvath

Just when it seemed like Navy had finally picked a starting QB, disaster struck. Head Coach Brian Newberry says sophomore Blake Horvath is out indefinitely due to a thumb injury sustained against North Texas last weekend.

Coach New hasn’t named a starter for Saturday’s game against Charlotte. Senior Tai Lavatai and freshman Braxton Woodson are the only ones getting practice reps. ($)

South River forfeits games due to ineligible player

South River High School’s varsity boys soccer team will forfeit their first four wins due to an ineligible player's participation. And while we don’t know the reason for ineligibility, we do know the player in question hasn’t played since AACPS launched an investigation.

Though the big record swing will change their postseason seeding, it won’t revoke their playoff ticket. Every boys varsity soccer team makes the playoffs in Maryland public schools.
