Fourth of July roundup, AACPS adopts budget, Induction Day...
TOGETHER WITH
Good morning, Annapolis. Today we have no silly joke for this intro. No witty quip. Just some of the most inspiring words ever said in Annapolis.
Yes, weāre putting out a damn paper tomorrow.

Letās get to it.
āRyan Sneddon
Thank you, Dr. Bailey
I met Dr. Marianne Bailey last September when her kids did the Naptown Scoop Scavenger Hunt. She was deep in the middle of building her second veterinary hospital ā the first being 15 minutes from my childhood home on the Eastern Shore. Fast forward 9 months. . . .
The clinic is done, weāre friends (especially when she wins dinner parties at fundraiser auctions), and Iām excited to announce that Western Shore Veterinary Hospital is a Single Scoop sponsor of Naptown Scoopās Third Anniversary Party.
The party is August 18 from 6:30ā9:30 PM at the Annapolis Maritime Museum and thanks to sponsors like Dr. Bailey and Brad Kappel, weāve planned a gourmet dinner, open bar, and even oysters! Weād love to celebrate with you.

15 minutes to Annapolis, 20 minutes to St. Michaels
Not by car. By boat! This Eastern Shore estateās location is amazing for boating. Good thing thereās a private pier with an 8000-pound lift and 2 jet ski lifts. Want to go inside?
5 bedrooms and 4.5 baths spread across 4,500 custom-built square feet, thoughtfully designed to maximize views. This home has the rare trifecta of views ā Annapolis, Thomas Point Lighthouse, and the Bay Bridge. Just wait until you see everything lit up after dinner on the patio.
Inside, the living room with windows that perfectly frame the Bay immediately draws you in. From there, head for the cozy family room (with fireplace) thatās open to the gourmet eat-in kitchen with a double island. Donāt worry. Thereās formal dining for impressing the in-laws.
When the day is done, retire to your sanctuary ā a main level primary bedroom (also with fireplace) and a spa-like bathroom with a steam shower.
THE DIGEST
New blood
About 1,200 teenagers will get dropped off at the Naval Academy for Induction Day tomorrow. I-Day is the first day of Plebe Summer for the class of 2027 ā six weeks of rigorous physical and mental training that āturns civilians into midshipmen.ā The Mids will lose their street clothes (and most of their hair), take an oath in front of Bancroft Hall, then march inside ā not to be seen again until August 10.
š«” I-Day tips: The action happens on the Yard but lots of parents will park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium so you may notice some traffic. And definitely call your favorite restaurants to see if thereās a long wait. Family and friends are welcome to attend the 6 PM Oath of Office ceremony. Arrive by 5:45 at the absolute latest. Standard Yard security measures apply.
ā ļø Goodbye exit 31
Itās been real. Itās been fun. But it hasnāt been real fun so exit 31 has gotta go. MD SHA permanently closed eastbound Route 50 entry and exit ramps at Whitehall Road (aka exit 31) last night. SHA says the closure enhances safety and āreduces potential conflict.ā Scoop says stop thinking youāre smart and skipping Bridge traffic by taking the local roads. Those are for the local residents who you know, actually need them.
Work was scheduled to end at 5 AM this morning but there may be lingering double lane closures heading eastbound.
Teachers unions happy, FY24 budget adopted
Everyone at AACPS and the teachersā unions must have been reading negotiation books before bedtime recently because for the first time in over 10 years, AACPS made an agreement with all four bargaining units before adopting the next yearās budget.
Big wins this week include an $8,000 bump in starting pay for starting teacher salaries ā which are now $58,161 ā and a step and 6% cost of living adjustment for Unit I employees. Shortly after the latter deal was signed, the Board of Education unanimously approved the $1.65 billion FY24 operating budget.

Surprising things you may not know about hospice care
Did you know hospice is about living?
Hospice care is about helping people live as fully as possible. Hospice of the Chesapeake provides patient-centered care for the body, mind, and spirit of those living with a life-limiting illness. Our care focuses on symptom management, planning for the journey, and caring for the family.
Did you know hospice isnāt just for the very end? In consultation with their physician, patients can enjoy the benefits of hospice care for months and months. Just like President Jimmy Carter. The most frequent comment patients and families share is that they wish theyād reached out sooner.

CIVIL NEWS
š©AACPSā proposed flag policy
What flags can fly in schools? That's up in the air. The Board of Education heard a proposal Monday to limit flags on AACPS property to those āwith a bona fide educational purpose.ā City flags, county flags, state flags, and Old Glory herself would of course be allowed.
As drafted, school principals will determine whatās bona fide. It's a hot topic. Constituents submitted 1,600 written comments while others stood outside the meeting. . . waving flags.
A key amendment ā the right for employees, students, and visitors to wear items that feature a flag ā passed 5 to 3. The final vote will happen at the boardās July 12 meeting. ($)
