All Scoop wants for our Birthday 🎂

Friends – as you may have heard, we’re celebrating a birthday this week. The Scoop is turning 4 and we are so grateful so many of you have joined us along the way. Grateful for every Scoop you open, Journal article you read, and email you send with ideas, feedback, or to just say hi! 😃

We’re sitting right on the cusp of 20,000 subscribers. And you know what would be a super special b-day gift? If we can crash through that benchmark before Scoop’s party on Friday! 🥳

So here’s the deal. Whoever refers the most people to the Scoop between now and our party at 6:30 PM on Friday gets a $150 gift card to any restaurant or store in town. Literally anywhere you want.

How do you refer? Great question. Scroll down in this email until you see this:

Then just send the link you see (everyone’s is unique) to your friends with a sweet little tidbit about how useful you find the Scoop. Or click that button and share the link from there. You can see everyone who signed up and didn’t confirm there too which is good because only confirmed referrals count.

Now get referring! A very generous gift card awaits but we’re only giving it out if we actually hit 20,000.

THE DIGEST

Arts in Education Grants 🎨

Applications open tomorrow for the Anne Arundel Arts Council’s Arts in Education Grants, which enables schools to apply for funding for arts-related programs and presentations. See guidelines and apply via Submittable through March 5, 2025 (applications accepted on a rolling basis and considered monthly).

When Life Gives You Sewage, Make Sure You’re Not Swimming in It 😬

This news really stinks. On Sunday evening, 16,200 gallons of sewage spilled into Cypress Creek in Severna Park, prompting an emergency closure from its southern branch to Dill Road and Oak Grove Circle. A sewer pipe break on Ritchie Highway caused the spill, which was reported at 5 PM and contained by 9:30 PM. The cause of the break remains unclear.

PSA: The affected area was limed and vacuumed and the surrounding water area is closed for seven days. Bathing beaches and recreational waters are also closed for swimming and other direct water contact. Anyone exposed should wash immediately with soap and warm water, including their clothing. The health department will continue monitoring water quality. ($)

AACPS Cell Phone policy changes 📲

AACPS is calling for a new cell phone policy to maximize the focus on instruction, remove distractions, and improve mental health among students. Key changes by student level:

  • Elementary and middle school students must keep phones off or on silent mode and out of sight during the school day.

  • High school students may use their phones during lunch but must have them off or on silent mode and out of sight at all other times, including between classes.

Students who violate guidelines will face escalating discipline, starting with a warning and leading to phone confiscation. Parents or guardians must pick up confiscated phones. Teachers will reinforce the new guidelines at the start of the school year.

Ramos named to Butkus Award watch list 🏈 📝

Best in the nation is no small title, so it’s a big deal that the Butkus Award selection committee has its eye on Navy senior linebacker Colin Ramos. He was recently included among 51 linebackers from across the country (and the only player from a service academy) on the watch list for the prestigious Butkus Award. The honor recognizes players who represent qualities like toughness, on-field leadership, and competitiveness. Semi-finalists and finalists will be announced in November, and the winner will be revealed on December 10.
