THE DIGEST

The Voice of Navy Athletics, Pete Medhurst, dies at 55

Itā€™s with a heavy heart that we report Pete Medhurst passed away on Monday after a battle with brain cancer. He was perhaps best known as the Voice of Navy Athletics ā€“ a title earned from 28 years on the Navy Radio Network. Peteā€™s voice was heard near and far though ā€“ from Washington Nationals broadcasts to DC sports talk shows to pre- and post-game shows for the Ravens Radio Network and even horse races at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington. For the past two seasons, Pete also co-hosted our Anchors Aweigh Podcast with a fellow Navy athletics legend, Bill Wagner.

Tributes are pouring in on social media remembering Pete for his professionalism and intense dedication to his craft. Pete is survived by his wife and three children. A GoFundMe set up when he first started treatment has received a flurry of donations in the wake of his death. Funds will now be used to support the family.

What do USNA service assignments mean? šŸ¤”

If you know any Midshipman at the Naval Academy, you mightā€™ve heard talk about service assignments last fall. And because most of us donā€™t want to admit when we donā€™t know something, we just kind of went with the conversation and didnā€™t ask what that meant.

Seniors ā€” formally known as Midshipmen, 1st Class ā€” submit 6 choices at the start of the academic year for their first assignment. A few months later, they find out what they got. Those assignments might include naval aviation, U.S. Marine Corps, surface warfare, submarine force, cyber warfare, special warfare, or other specialized roles.

When they commission in the spring (because Commissioning Week is about more than just the Blue Angels air show, of course), theyā€™ll graduate from the academy into those careers.

šŸ—“ Worth noting: Any midshipmen commissioning as surface warfare officers will pick their ship at a Ship Selection ceremony that usually happens around this time of year. Itā€™s not open to the public but itā€™s usually streamed. Weā€™ll share more soon.

Dog of the Week: Levi

Attention all of you childless singletons: have we got the perfect bachelor for you. Meet Levi, a lovable chunk-of-a-hunk Olde English Bulldog mix who is four years old, 80 pounds, and all muscle. Levi enjoys long walk-and-talks, mealtimes, and sniffing the occasional butt. Levi has a profound disdain for cats and anyone who touches his squeaky toys. Me too, Levi. He is searching for a strong soulmate to take control of his leash and lead him into his next adventure. Call the SPCA today to check out this cuddlebug.

More than $50K awarded to farm-based businesses šŸ§‘ā€šŸŒ¾

Eight farm-based businesses are reaping the rewards of the Agricultural Business Improvement Grant program. The Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation and the Maryland Agricultural and Resource-Based Industry Development Corporation awarded $50,508 in matching grants to these Anne Arundel County businesses: Zangā€™s Farm, Hollywood Farm, Rawlings Farm, FAFO Farm, The Hill, Maidstone Harvest, Ryan Mouldā€™s Fresh Crabs and Seafood, and Mallard Creek Farm.

Ryan Mouldā€™s a regular at the Anne Arundel Farmerā€™s Market. But most of these businesses arenā€™t regularly selling (like Ryan) because itā€™s winter and well, frigid. But, holy cow! FAFO Farmā€™s hosting a Valentineā€™s Day-themed photo shoot on February 8 with their highland cows. Book now. šŸ® šŸ“ø ā¤ļø
