Good morning, Annapolis. There may or may not be a secret message hidden in this newsletter. Good luck.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Summer Resource Fairs

  • National Night Out

  • Sweet Hearts Patisserie grand re-opening

Let’s get to it.

—Ryan Sneddon

Thank you, Dr. Molly

Current Dermatology is a gem of a business. More Scoop readers email, text, or stop me on the street to thank me for introducing them to Dr. Molly than any of our other partners. And for good reason.

Dr. Molly is kind, skilled, and obsessed with creating an amazing patient experience. She is one of Scoop’s best advertising partners. That’s why we want to thank her for sponsoring the Oyster Bar at Scoop’s third anniversary party.

Unfortunately Dr. Molly won’t be able to join us because she’ll be about 2 days away from welcoming an adorable new baby into the world but her top-notch aesthetician Heather (on the right) will be. Molly says, “Enjoy the oysters!” 🦪

Rare Eastport Waterfront

Snap this one up quick. Eastport waterfront is the unicorn of Annapolis real estate. This coastal colonial has 5 bedrooms, 6 bedrooms, and a 2-car garage – another Eastport rarity.

The interior living spaces are beautifully appointed so you can move right in. Professionals will love the spacious office with heaps of natural light – gotta pay for this somehow, right? Entertainers will love the open floor plan and lower-level lounge with a wet bar and pool table.

When it’s time to play, this home is all business. There’s tons of outdoor deck space featuring a plunge pool, private balcony for the primary suite, and generous shade from mature trees.

Follow the path to the community dock on Back Creek where you have the largest slip – 40 feet long, 8 feet MLW, and permanently deeded to this home.

2 Little Harbor Way is a great address. Contact Brad Kappel today for a private tour to make it your great address.

THE DIGEST

I’ll take “Librarians know best” for $400, please

Local librarian Leann Craumer appeared on Jeopardy! on Monday, competing against an elementary school teacher and a compliance analyst. Leann held her own until disaster struck in Final Jeopardy.

  • Hoping to be the county’s next Jeopardy! brainiac? Here’s what Leann’s process looked like: Step 1: Know many things. Step 2: Pass online tests. Step 3: Audition. Step 4: Wait 18 months. Step 5: Get chosen! Step 6: Compete – and keep it secret until it airs! ($)

Maryland’s congressional delegation moves to protect Greenbury Point

Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin have added a provision in the Senate’s defense spending bill that prevents the Navy from restricting public access to Greenbury Point without congressional approval. ICYMI, Naval Academy Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk awakened a grassroots conservation movement when he requested a proposal for a new golf course on the waterfront property last year. Congressman John Sarbanes tried to add a similar provision to the House’s defense spending act but it was blocked.

Two things worth noting: The Senate bill hasn’t passed yet (but the Greenbury Point bit isn’t expected to be a sticking point) and the provision doesn’t explicitly block a golf course. Conservationists still believe it’s a step in the right direction. ($)

🩹 Free back-to-school vaccines

AACPS and the Department of Health are offering AACPS’ required vaccines and covid vaccines this summer. No word on whether there will be free lollipops for brave kids who don’t cry 🍭

  • Meningococcal and Tdap vaccines for AACPS students entering 7th grade in August.

  • COVID-19 vaccines (Pfizer) for any county resident ages 5+, regardless of school status.

July 24, 25, 31 | August 1, 7, 8. 10 AM – 2 PM at 6 locations. Learn more and register here.

CIVIL NEWS

County Council meeting recap

Two bills imposing regulations on addiction treatment centers failed to pass during Monday’s City Council meeting. The first, proposed by Councilman Nathan Volke, would have required treatment centers to comply with fire safety standards they aren’t currently held to and redefined the definition of recovery residences. The second, proposed by Councilwoman Allison Pickard, would have adopted the state’s definition of a recovery residence instead of Volke’s new definition. Representatives of several treatment center operators said the regulations would force them to shut down facilities and lose over 100 beds.

Councilwoman Lisa Rodvien was the ultimate vote on both bills. She voted against Volke’s bill saying, “We really need to have a better handle on exactly what the problem is before we take action.” She voted against Pickard’s bill because she wanted more time to review it and couldn’t pass a hold to do so. Navy makes college football’s “most improved” list

According to college football analyst Phil Steele, Navy football is that kid who left 9th grade all pimply and came back in the fall ready to win a beauty contest. Phil ranked Navy #14 on his annual most improved list and said, “they were better than their record last year and their defense remains stout.” We did notice however that Navy is listed below Army (#13) on Phil’s list so we dropped him a note. Nobody likes a misprint 😉

⚽️ Annapolis Blues’ miracle first season continues

What a week for soccer.

Saturday = Blues win the Mid-Atlantic Conference in storybook fashion (last second tying goal, rain, & penalty kicks)
Thursday = FIFA Women’s World Cup starts with 32 nations on deck. 💪
Friday = Blues head to New Jersey to play West Chester United in the East Region semifinals. If they win, they play Saturday in the East Region final.

Making the trek? Kickoff is 4 PM 7/21 at the Montclair State University soccer park. Tickets are $10 for adults 17+ or $5 for kids under 16.

Oh yeah, and Messi plays in Miami now so it’s officially called soccer from here on out.
