Annapolis first, global now 🌎

Who doesn’t love to see a local professional shine? We sure do! And Naptown’s latest hero making it global is Brad Kappel. The Annapolis-native was recognized by Sotheby’s as Top 100 Real Estate Agent Worldwide for a second consecutive year.

That’s really something at Sotheby’s with a nearly 300-year heritage and prestigious reputation in luxury real estate industries. For a little perspective, Sotheby’s has 26,000 agents across 1,058 offices in 80 countries.

It’s a deserved testament to Brad’s work. Through the iconic Sotheby’s brand, he not only connects his sellers with local buyers but also brings worldwide exposure. Find out what Brad Kappel can do for you.

THE DIGEST

St. Mary’s wins field hockey championship

In 2022, St. Mary’s field hockey had a bit of an upset and moved down to the B Conference. But one year and lots of hard work later, they snagged the B Conference championship with a 2-1 win over archrival Severn School. It’s their first field hockey championship since 2018 and the school’s second in history. Awesome to see the bounce back and with their young team, they've got big things ahead. ($)

Attention: Naptown Scoop is dancing for hundreds of people in 10 days 🕺

Movers and Shakers is in 10 days. That’s when I (Scoop publisher Ryan) will perform a Latin dance routine with a local dance professional a la Dancing With the Stars. We’re raising money for Maryland Hall and the Benjamin Mario Shadrick Foundation. Six other local “stars” will also dance to compete for the title Mover and Shaker of the Year. There are still great seats available and tickets are only $75. I may be biased but I think it’s going to be one of the most fun fundraisers of the year. See you there?

In case you missed it

⚠️ Bay Bridge alert: The eastbound span of the Bay Bridge will be closed Sunday (11/12) from 12:01 AM to 2 PM for the Bay Bridge Run. Westbound lanes will operate two ways. The eastbound off-ramp from Route 50 to Route 8 will be closed. The on-ramp from Route 8 to westbound Route 50 will also be closed.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Economic Gardening round 2

Annapolis is gearing up for a second round of Economic Gardening this fall. What’s Economic Gardening? It focuses on helping what’s known as Stage 2 companies grow. Stage 2 companies are often a very small percentage of the companies in an area but make up a large chunk of the jobs.

Last year, Annapolis put 6 maritime businesses through its inaugural Economic Gardening program. There’s an information session for the second round today at 11 AM on Zoom. RSVP here.

To be considered for the program, businesses must:

  • Be for-profit, privately held, and based in Annapolis

  • Have operated for 2+ years

  • Have revenue between $1–50 million

  • Employ 10–99 full-time workers

  • Show growth in employment or revenue for 2 of the past 5 years

  • Have revenue growth potential for the next 3 years

  • Provide products or services beyond the local area

Retail, restaurant establishments, and professional services providers (accounting, law, staffing, etc.) do not qualify.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Save a tree, fight ivy

It may look pretty but ivy + trees = ☠️🌳 That’s why rangers and friends from Quiet Waters Park plus the local group Save Our Trees are teaming up to beat invasive ivy. They’ve already saved 2k trees and hope for 3k more. Show up this Saturday (11/11) at Quiet Waters Park to join the cause. Bring your own gloves, loppers, and hand saws. 9:45 AM–12 noon. Meet at the Sassafras Pavilion. Register here.

You + 🐶 + 🎄 = 😄

Lights on the Bay is a two-mile drive through Sandy Point State Park lit up with holiday lights benefiting the SPCA. Usually it’s for cars and buses, but Lights and Leashes is an exception. For two nights only, animal lovers can bring their pets and walk through the show. Leashes are required and walkers must exit by 10 PM. $20/car. 11/17 and 11/18.

Save this Date: West Annapolis Holiday Market

Tis the season for holiday markets. West Annapolis is hosting one on December 2 sponsored by West Annapolis Civic Association. Shop with 30+ artisans and vendors, enjoy food and drinks, and get pics with Santa. 11 AM–6 PM in the parking lot at Giddings and Annapolis Streets.
