Virtual learning could replace some snow days, sounds of sunset, America's largest charity sailing regatta...

Good morning, Annapolis. The Oregon Duck does a pushup per point every time Oregon’s football team scores. Oregon scored 81 points last weekend meaning The Duck did 546 pushups during the game. Rumor has it Bill the Goat does 600 every morning. Without breaks. . .

Nonprofit of the Week: Hospice Cup
I love how every city hosts unique fundraisers. Some host charity golf tournaments. I attended charity skeet shoots and cow patty bingo (look it up) in South Carolina. But Annapolis’ charity sailing regattas are the best. We even have our own Triple Crown.
Hospice Cup is the largest and longest-running of all charity regattas. Not just in Annapolis, but in the entire country.
Participating hospices use the money raised to provide excellent, comfortable end-of-life care that’s often not covered by insurance.
Hospice Cup XLII is next Saturday (9/16). Over 60 boats are already registered. Adding yours to the list starts at just $75. And like any good regatta, there’s a post-race party. This year’s is at Horn Point Marina on beautiful Back Creek with music from local steel drum legend Orlando Phillips.
Another unique part of Hospice Cup is Artist of the Year. Almost since the first race in 1981, they’ve chosen an artist to create a special piece for the event. This year’s Artist of the Year is Brenda Larson. You can see her creation above.
Whether you want to race, watch, volunteer, or donate, check out hospicecup.org to learn about this storied organization.

🚨 Listen: Anchors Aweigh talks to Navy Water Polo
Navy Water Polo just got back from a successful trip to the Triton Invitational in California where they hung with the best teams in the country and managed to upset #9 Long Beach State. After the tournament, they met up with #1 Cal and put up a brave fight but ultimately lost 18–6.
On this week’s Anchors Aweigh podcast, Pete Medhurst and Bill Wagner interviewed Coach Luis Nicolao and captain Caden Capobianco. They also touched on Navy football as we head into the home opener, spoke to a star basketball alum, and discussed other notable Navy results from a packed Labor Day weekend.
Tune in wherever you listen to podcasts. It’s a 59-minute listen and a must for all Navy sports fans.
School board sues social media giants 🤳
Anne Arundel has joined several other MD school districts in suing multiple social media companies. The targets? Meta (Facebook & Instagram), ByteDance (TikTok), Snapchat, and somewhat surprisingly, Google. They claim the addictive apps are ruining the mental, emotional, and social health of the county's 85,000 students.
The school board is seeking unspecified monetary damages but don't worry fellow taxpayers. Law firm Baird Mandalas Brockstedt & Federico is working on contingency – i.e. they don't get paid unless we do. ($)
🇺🇸 We will never forget
There are several things happening over the next few days to remember the deadliest attack that’s ever happened on our shores.
Naval Academy midshipmen will place 2,977 small U.S. flags along Stribling Walk on Friday to remember the lives lost on 9/11. 14 of those flags will be larger to represent Naval Academy alumni who died. The flags will stay up until 9/12.
On Monday, small groups of midshipmen will continuously run Old Glory around the Yard from 8:45 AM (when the first plane crashed) until 5:20 PM (when the final tower, Tower 7, fell).
Annapolis 9/11 Heroes Run. This race (5K or 1 mile) welcomes runners and walkers of all levels and ages to honor the heroes of 9/11. It’s organized by the Travis Manion Foundation in partnership with GORUCK so rucking options are available as well. Sunday, September 17 at 11 AM at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Register or volunteer.

The Chipotle of noodles, salad, and honey
Someone has to put the “grow” in “Honeygrow.” Fast-casual chain Honeygrow is planning to open several new locations in 2023 – including one in Annapolis. Honeygrow offers made-to-order stir-fry, salads, and honeybars (their version of a fruit cup). You’ll see it sometime this fall at 2510 Riva Road but until then, explore the menu.

CIVIL NEWS
Virtual learning could replace some snow days
AACPS Superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell proposed a plan this week to ensure the school year always ends on time. It will allow schools to convert up to 8 inclement weather days into virtual learning days. The Board of Education will vote on it during its September 20 meeting. If it passes, it'll go to State Superintendent Mohammed Choudhury for approval.
⛄ Very important note for kids (& sledding hills) everywhere: the plan doesn’t mean snow days are gone for good.
Committee named for Crownsville Hospital Memorial Park
County Executive Steuart Pittman signed an executive order Monday to create an advisory committee overseeing the Crownsville Hospital Memorial Park. The committee includes Chris Trumbauer (County Budget Officer), Dr. Pamela Brown (County Partnership for Children, Youth and Families), Isabella Firth (Maryland Commission on Civil Rights), and 11 other members. The group will collect public input to make recommendations for the property. Its first meeting is September 28.
Context: The Crownsville State Hospital was once located across these 544 acres and 69 buildings but the campus has been vacant since 2004. It holds a dark past. Pittman has been hoping to respectfully redevelop the grounds since the county purchased it from the state in 2022.

Naptown Scoop’s second favorite fundraiser
Rock the Dock holds a special place in my heart. Back in 2021, it was my first fundraiser after starting Scoop. The first time I met Scoop readers in real life. And the Rotaract always supports an awesome nonprofit. This year it’s The Complete Player – a nonprofit equipping underserved youth to be tomorrow’s leaders. Rock the Dock is next Thursday (9/14) at the Annapolis Maritime Museum. Get your all-inclusive tickets for only $70. – Ryan Sneddon *
