THE DIGEST

Key School teacher releases memoir 📘

Retired Key School teacher Katherine Haas recently released her memoir Little Jade, which follows her life story as she moved from Germany to China to the United States, all before the age of 11. Haas, who taught for 44 years, actually developed her skills as a writer by taking classes at AACC. She finally started to write her life story during the COVID-19 pandemic. Little Jade is available through the publisher Stirred Stories or other retailers, including Amazon. ($)

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Scoop, there it is! 🎉 Don’t miss the party of the summer

We don’t know how summer is going by so quickly, but our upcoming fourth anniversary party is only a little more than 2 weeks away. All of us here at Naptown’s friendliest email newsletter are grateful it’s been smooth sailing for the past four years, and we want to celebrate with YOU, our readers. Come join us on August 16 for a party at the Annapolis Maritime Museum (723 Second Street Annapolis, MD 21403) from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM. There’s going to be a gourmet dinner from Ken’s Creative Kitchen, oysters, an open bar, and dessert from Always Ice Cream Company.

💗 Oh, and we gotta emphasize the most important part: This celebration is all for a good cause. The fundraising beneficiary of this year’s event is Annapolis Hope, a grassroots community fundraiser created to save a local family from eviction after a mass shooting took the life of their husband and father.

Carnival at the mall 7/31–8/4 🎠 🎡 🍕🍦

Did you miss the Earleigh Heights Carnival? Or, maybe you just need another carnival fix? You’re in luck. The Carnival at the Annapolis Mall comes to town Wednesday, July 31 through Sunday, August 4. The Merry Go Round, Tea Cups, Gondola Wheel, and Scrambler are just a few of the planned attractions. Expect all the carnival major food groups like funnel cakes, fries, hot dogs, ice cream, and pizza too. Jolly Shows runs the carnival and you can buy your ride tickets or an unlimited wristband to avoid long ticket lines. 🎟️ 🙌🏻

Theater Talk Tuesday

CTM presents The Miser
Classic theater feels a lot more approachable (and delicious) when it’s performed in the outdoor courtyard at Reynolds Tavern, as Classic Theatre of Maryland does every year. This time around it’s The Miser, Moliere’s comedy about a nasty miser and his household trying to get one over on him. See it tonight at 7:30 PM or any Tuesday throughout August (except August 20).

ASGT presents Big Fish
The tall tales of traveling salesman Edward Bloom come to life onstage at Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre with its final show of the season, Big Fish. This musical adaptation opens next week and runs through September 1.

Ren Fest is 1 month away 🏰

Hear ye, hear ye! The Maryland Renaissance Festival (MDRF) opens August 24, and tickets go on sale August 1. So get your court attire ready and start dreaming about those turkey legs. 👑🍗

Each day the Fest is open from 10 AM–7 PM and offers a full schedule of entertainment, plus shopping, games, and food. It's also one of the few chances you have to watch Maryland’s state sport, jousting. (Yes, jousting is really our state sport, and yes, they really have real jousting tournaments every day at Fest). Can’t make it opening weekend? It’s open every weekend, plus Labor Day, through October 20.

Pro tip: MDRF only gets more crowded as the season goes on, so jump on those early dates (especially if you are bringing kids!)
