THE DIGEST
Kindness Grows Here grants available 🌻
Know a kid who’s dedicated to kindness? Kindness Grows Here is a nonprofit that’s offering funding to bring their visions to life. Kid Kindness grant applications are now open and due by November 1. Previous grants have helped children from 32 states and 7 countries undertake projects to promote kindness, including 12-year-old Nyala Williams of Crofton, who used the grant to install a Little Free Library.
So if your child, grandchild, niece, nephew, godchild, neighbor, or whoever could achieve something great with the right funding, check out the application process. Applications are open to individuals or groups (all applicants must be between the ages of 5-18) and no grant writing experience is necessary!
Maritime Welcome Center still draws Qs
The City Dock revitalization project remains a topic of discussion nearly a year after the first community forum. At a recent Historic Annapolis event, concerns centered on well . . . the proposed Maritime Welcome Center (replacing the harbormaster’s office), including its size and cost. Other debated aspects were the planned fountain, pergola, stage, and FEMA’s pending $33 million grant.
The center will be attached to the rear of the Capt. William H. Burtis House, a historic waterman’s house dating to the 1880s. The latest and smaller concept design priced at $10 million ($3 million more than the initial estimate), includes an outdoor maritime classroom and watermen’s facilities. Next, Historic Annapolis will submit feedback to the city. ($)
Proposed School Construction Budget 💰🏫
This week, Superintendent Bedell laid out a $204.7 million capital budget for the coming fiscal year (about $32 million less than this year’s budget). Nearly 60% is for building three new schools: the Center of Applied Technology in Severn and Old Mill High School and Old Mill Middle School North, both in Millersville. The recommendation also includes:
$9.2 million for a new bus facility 🚌
$8 million for maintenance backlog 🔧
$5 million for kindergarten and prekindergarten additions 🧒
Bedell gave the BOE his six-year capital improvement plan through 2031. The board will hold a public meeting on September 16 and vote on the plan at the next school board meeting on September 18. Once approved by the board, the plan will go to the state’s Interagency Commission on School Construction and be part of the FY 2026 request to County Executive Steuart Pittman in February. ($)
