THE DIGEST

Annapolis Almanac: Tales From Our Past

I know what you’re thinking — football? At St. John’s College? Our local liberal arts school is better known for poetry and philosophy than pigskin. But St. John’s once had a thriving football team, one that played against University of Maryland more than a few times. In fact, St. John’s beat UMD by a brutal score of 62-0 in one particular 1899 game that ended up on the front page of the Washington Post. So, what happened?
Well, in the late 1930s, St. John’s changed from a military school and implemented the New Program, the curriculum it still follows today. At the time, football had a bad reputation for being brutal and the value of intercollegiate sports was subject to scrutiny. Stringfellow Barr, the college’s president, ended intercollegiate sports at St. John’s in 1938, but a thriving intramural program continued. Today, if you ask us what athletic endeavor we most associate with St. John’s, we’d say croquet!
🔍 As for this pic: This 1922 team portrait was likely taken around the time photographer Edgar H. Pickering moved to Annapolis and set up his studio on Maryland Avenue. He’d eventually become a yearbook photographer for St. John’s.

In addition to having their design on an MTA bus, winning artists are invited to an Earth Day event where their artwork will be revealed. Check out contest rules and submission guidelines.
