Not-so-great grade for the Bay 👎

As the end of school gives way to summer, we’re hoping the kids brought home better report cards than the Chesapeake Bay? University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Science just gave it a C. If we’re being honest, it isn’t that the 19th annual Chesapeake Bay and Watershed Report Card is that bad. Or rather, it’s not much worse than it usually is. But it’s still not great, and after years of improvement, it’s actually going down.

The Bay’s C grade reflects a 50% score based on factors like dissolved oxygen, water clarity, and aquatic grasses. That’s down 5 points from last year, when the Bay hit a 22-year high — which means that this year’s 50% is still part of a long-term improvement, even if it’s a temporary setback.

And if I had known UMD gave Cs for 50%, I definitely would have gone there 😉

Compromise Street Repaving 🚧

We hope this doesn’t compromise your commute: The City of Annapolis is repaving part of Compromise Street between the Eastport Bridge and Newman Street starting on Monday. This multi-step process, which will also include the removal of the brick island on Randall Street, shouldn’t be too terribly disruptive, as work will be done at night between 9 PM and 5 AM. But if you’re heading down Compromise Street during those hours, be prepared for periodic street closures or traffic control.

LOCAL BUSINESS

What we’re up to this weekend

I hope you’re spending some quality time with everyone’s favorite New Balance-wearing grill master (AKA Dad) this weekend. If you are Dad, happy Father’s Day. No matter who you’re spending time with, here’s where you might spend it this weekend.

SATURDAY

🌊 River Days. Anne Arundel County’s public water access festivals with boat rides, water activities, and more.

☀️ Spring into Summer Festival. Live music by The Groove Spot Band, create your own flower bouquets, and many more family-friendly activities.

🎥 Movies Under the Stars. Outdoor movies at Annapolis Town Center. It’s no drive-in (we’re trying to bring those back) but we’ll take. This week’s film: The Parent Trap 1998 version.

🍝 Dinner Under the Stars. Not affiliated with the above event. West Street shuts down, restaurants move tables into the street, the Bayside Big Band plays, and everyone has a good time. One of just four Saturday dinner’s this summer. The rest are on Wednesday.

🎶 Porchfest. The inaugural hosting of a movement that’s sweeping the nation. Porches, stoops, and driveways in Germantown-Homewood are the stages while local musicians play 45-minute sets.

SUNDAY

⚽ Annapolis Blues doubleheader. The men face Northern Virginia FC at 5 PM. The women face Virginia Beach United at 7:30 PM.

ALL WEEKEND LONG

🎡 Carnival at the Mall. Games you can’t win, food you shouldn’t eat, and rides that came in on trucks. There’s nothing like a classic carnival. It rolls out after this weekend so go now or forever hold your peace.

Foodie Friday: Father’s Day + Fav Scoops

In honor of Father’s Day this Sunday, we’re sharing food recs to treat Dad.

Watermark’s got a brand new boat

There’s nothing like getting new toys. Especially when that toy is a boat. Watermark, our local 53-year-old tour boat company, just got a 26-foot, 16-passenger picnic-style boat from Crosby Boatworks. The new vessel, Sky Lee, brings the Watermark fleet to a baker’s dozen–AKA 13 boats. Sky Lee is similar in size to Watermark’s Miss Anne and Miss Anne II, both of which have been trolling Annapolis’ harbor since the 1980s.

Watermark will use the Sky Lee for public cruises, private charters, and as a platform for its learning partners, Severn River Association and Blacks of the Chesapeake.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Stuck without a summer camp? Don’t panic.

It’s the nightmare of all parents: you find yourself in the last week of school only to realize you don’t have summer camp plans lined up, and everything got booked solid back in February. But don’t go fully gray just yet: there are plenty of options to keep your kids occupied (and you sane) this summer.

Anne Arundel Public Libraries have free programs practically daily, designed for toddlers through teens. Bookmark their full calendar here.

The County still has openings for their summer camps, which cater toward kids of all ages. You might choose an adventure day camp at Quiet Waters Park or an aquatics camp at North Arundel Aquatic Center. These camps are all affordable and many offer extended care options for working parents and guardians.

For artistically creative kids, both Maryland Hall and ArtFarm have plenty of workshops and camps during the day to keep your kids engaged and happy when the heat index starts to rise.
