THE DIGEST

Oyster Feature, Day 1: Middleton Tavern – The OG

Welcome to National Oyster Week. At the Scoop, we’re shellebrating by highlighting a different local oyster establishment every day this week. And eating a boatload of oysters in the process. 🦪

And why not start with the OG Oyster Shooter? Middleton Tavern’s founder Jerry Hardesty claims to have invented the oyster shooter (an oyster, cocktail sauce, vodka, horseradish, and pepper) in 1968. And many an oyster has been shot in the 56 years since. Pro tip: slosh it around first to avoid a sauce stache.

Other oyster-oriented dishes include Oyster Po’Boys, Rockefeller Style Oysters, Fried Oysters, and if you’re feeling decadent, an iconic Seafood Tower.

Ever the oyster-preneurs, Middleton’s also offers “Oyster Shooter Kits to Go.” Each $20 kit comes with all you need to DIY: 6 fresh shucked oysters, the famous shooter sauce, and Middleton’s Oyster Ale.

Why was the Bay Bridge closed last week?

Bay Bridge traffic feels inevitable in the summer, but not usually in the middle of a Thursday. So what the heck happened Thursday?

Turns out there was a ship in distress. The 946-foot Denebola lost steering as it approached the bridge around 1:50 PM. Traffic closed in both directions because you can’t be too careful with a rogue 1,000-foot ship. Denebola ended up passing safely through and was then inspected by the Coast Guard and American Bureau for shipping. Traffic resumed 15 minutes after it stopped.

Welcome, plebe parents! 👋

Imagine summer without TV, movies, the internet, or music — even restricted access to your phone. That’s how most Navy plebes spent the summer! So it’s a big deal for their parents and other family to visit for some quality time this upcoming weekend.

Starting Friday at noon, plebes reunite with their families and they’ll be able to show off what their new USNA life is like. Activities include touring the yard, a dress parade, eating in the dining facility, and meeting with faculty and staff.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

A note of gratitude from Scoop founder and publisher Ryan

4 years ago today, I had no idea what was next. I’d moved back to my childhood home during the pandemic, fresh off quitting the first and only “real” job I’d ever had. 5 days later, I decided to start writing the Naptown Scoop and 7 days after that, I sent the first newsletter to 70 people. Today 19,843 people are reading this. And I’m so grateful for every one of you.

That’s why I want to celebrate 4 years of Naptown Scoop with y’all. So consider this your (not so) formal invitation to Naptown Scoop’s Fourth Anniversary Soirée at the beautiful Annapolis Maritime Museum on August 16. We have to tell the caterers a final headcount on Friday so this is the last week to get tickets. Grab those here. All proceeds support Annapolis Hope.

Coming up this week

We know the Olympics are exciting and all, but at some point, you need to back away from the TV and actually get out. So here are some ways to do that this week:

🥊 Kids and teens can learn how to defend themselves at a Self-Defense Open House at Masada Tactical on Saturday 10 AM–noon.

📚 The American Association of University Women is collecting used books to benefit scholarships for local women. Drop off donations this Saturday 9 AM–noon at locations around Annapolis, Arnold, and Severna Park.

🎒 Team up with the Walk the Walk Foundation and Sunday Kids Chesapeake for a Backpack Drive to benefit students in need on Sunday 4:00–6:00 PM on the green at Annapolis Town Center.

ZIPS for Annapolis Hope 🧺

This is hard to believe, but ZIPS’ Annapolis Hope fundraiser has only two Wednesdays remaining. ZIPS Cleaners on West Street is donating 5% of sales every Wednesday to Annapolis Hope. So turn a chore into charity and drop your dry cleaning off on August 7 this week and August 14 (last chance!). — 1955 West Street, Annapolis, MD

It’s National Oyster Week 2024 🦪

DYK oysters clean the Chesapeake Bay waters and provide a habitat for other delicious species like crabs and rockfish? Or, that recycling their shells leads to more oysters returning to the bay? One reclaimed shell becomes a home for 10X as many baby oysters. Sounds like two great reasons to eat plenty of oysters during National Oyster Week (August 5–11)!

Here are some restaurants offering specials in collaboration with the Oyster Recovery Partnership. And keep an eye out for our oyster features every day this week.

Musical Monday

There are two things in the air right now: music and humidity. And since we don’t want to talk about the humidity, let’s focus on the music! We’ve got some great live concerts coming up this week around town:

📖 Join the Annapolis Opera for its Stories Through Music interactive program at Eastport-Annapolis Neck Library today at 6:30 PM, when kids can explore the meaning behind classical and popular songs.

🎷 What says Annapolis more than the USNA Band on City Dock? Catch the performance tomorrow (8/6) at 7:30 PM.

Nothing in this section is sponsored. They're just the things you need to know. I'll always let you know when something's sponsored.
