🧘‍♀️ Meet Mary Kay Connerton, AACPS’s New Wellness Coordinator 🧘‍♀️

Mary Kay (left) at the AACPS Excellence in Education Banquet 2023

Students learn best when they feel their best — that’s the philosophy Mary Kay Connerton had when she started a wellness program in Anne Arundel County Public Schools as a teacher. The program grew, Mary Kay won 2024 Maryland State Teacher of the Year, and now she has a new position as director of the wellness program that’s implemented all across schools in the county.

So, how does the program work? And how does Mary Kay expect to see it benefit students? We had the opportunity to pick her brain and get all the details about her background, why she started the program, how it grew, and what opportunities she sees ahead with this program. Check out our Q&A with Mary Kay in the journal this week.

Take it from (Scoop Editor) Chelsea, a parent of 4 AACPS students — this is a must-read for AACPS families!

THE DIGEST

Somebody out there is throwing water on the City of Annapolis’ efforts to protect downtown from floods. Who that somebody is, however, isn’t clear. An anonymous group of individuals filed a legal challenge in the Circuit Court against the City Dock Action Committee, which has spent 5 years creating plans that would make downtown more resilient to extreme weather events.

Because if it seems like City Dock floods more often these days than it used to — well, you’re right. More frequent and intense flooding, including 120 floods in 2024 alone, have interrupted business plus caused extensive (and expensive) damage. Mayor Gavin Buckley says, due to the anonymous nature of the complaint, it’s not clear what’s motivating it — but what’s clear is that it could cause delays for this resiliency plan to be put in place.

Triple Crown of Charity Sailing 🏆

You might say CRAB Sailing and Hospice Cup went all claws for a cause this past season 🦀 when it saw record participation in its three races: the Maryland Cures Cancer Regatta, the CRAB Cup, and the Hospice Cup. Overall, there were 251 boats, more than a thousand skippers and crews, and a total fundraising effort of $572K.

Leading in race performance for all three events and fundraising was John Dodge and Team Kobayashi for a Cure, who took the title of the Triple Crown of Charity Sailing. John and his team received accolades at an awards ceremony at CRAB Annapolis Adaptive Boating Center last week.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Tatte Bakery & Café to open ☕️

If you’re wondering how to say Tatte, you’re not alone. We did some investigative journalism (aka Googled it) and apparently it rhymes with latte and is a Hebrew nickname for “grandmother.” Lucky for us, Tatte is coming to town. This bakery and cafĂŠ specializes not only in coffee and pastries but also an extensive menu of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean sandwiches, salads, bowls, and more. Tatte Bakery & CafĂŠ officially opens next week on November 13.

A Message from 84 Lumber

As we transition into the cooler seasons, it’s time to think about maintaining your outdoor wood structures. Proper care in colder weather is vital for extending the life of your wood. If your wood is treated, consider reapplying sealant or stain before winter arrives. Ensure proper drainage around your wooden structures, and if heavy snow or rain is on the horizon, using a waterproof tarp for protection is a smart move. For more info on decking, visit 84 Lumber’s blog.*
