Good morning, Annapolis. Start the countdown. The new Hillman Garage opens in 7 days!

Let’s get to it.

Country living just 10 minutes from downtown

Close your eyes. Imagine an estate on a secluded piece of land. The main home is a gorgeous French manor with exquisite moldings; herringbone timber floors; and an elegant, thoughtful layout. Now follow me outside.

We can lounge in front of the wood-burning fireplace. Or cross the footbridge to the formal outdoor dining.

The final structure (aside from the greenhouse) is a 3-bay, detached carriage house. Above the garages is a kitchenette and recreation room. Upstairs could be a bedroom, office, playroom . . . your options are endless.

There’s so much more to see. 5 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, a kitchen with a Viking double oven and range any restaurant would envy, gym, wine cellar. . . . All just 10 minutes from downtown Annapolis. There’s simply nothing else like this available. Contact Brad Kappel today for a private tour.

Quick Hits

Better bring your own bags

County Council passed a bill on Monday banning plastic bags and requiring retailers to charge $0.10 a piece for paper bags. Certain exceptions were added via amendments for things you might not want in a paper bag like live fish, loose tobacco, and dry cleaning.

Elsewhere, the Council also passed a public campaign finance bill. This allows election candidates to get donations matched by taxpayer money as long as they don’t accept donations over $250 or any dough from PACs and special interest groups (aka lobbies). You have to qualify though.

County Executive candidates need at least 500 contributions equalling $40k. They’re eligible for up to $750k in taxpayer contributions. County Council candidates need at least 75 contributions equalling $7,500. They’re eligible for up to $125k in taxpayer contributions. ($)

Dr. Bedell’s post-entry plan

Roughly one year after starting as Superintendent of AACPS, Dr. Bedell has released his post-entry plan. It’s based on the five goals from his entry plan (see below) and input from thousands of students, staff, parents, and community members.

  • Developing unified school district governance

  • Ensuring an intentional focus on instructional programming

  • Increasing organizational effectiveness and efficiency

  • Creating a culture of trust through action

  • Establishing trust and confidence from the community at large

Although the document is 16 pages, it’s worth the read and you’ll be surprised at how easy it reads. Plus there are lots of pictures so it’s really more like 9 pages.

Shots fired

Since June 2, there have been no less than 6 reports of shots fired in Annapolis. Four had no animate victims although a home and a vehicle were hit. Two had victims – both in their mid-twenties. Unfortunately, 26-year-old Annapolis resident Amari Tydings passed away from her wounds. Our hearts go out to Amari’s family and friends as they grieve her loss.

Why start with the budget?

We’ve all heard it. The old construction adage that says whatever your budget, whatever your timeframe, double it and that’s what’ll happen. At Creative Spaces, you can forget that.

The Creative Spaces Way is a 10-step design process every project follows. It leaves nothing to chance. By step 9, you’ll know the cost and timeline of your project. No surprises. Just a smooth design process, reliable construction, and a stunning final product.

Whether you want a full-custom, luxury ground-up build or a whole-home remodel, you deserve the Creative Spaces experience. It’s like buying a house at Tiffany’s.

Does a golf coach play more or less golf once they retire?

Navy women’s golf head coach Nadia Ste-Marie has announced her retirement to move back to Florida with her family. Nadia started in Annapolis as an assistant pro at the Naval Academy Golf Course in 1999 after a 10-year LPGA Tour career. In 2012, AD Chet Gladchuk handpicked her to start the Academy’s women’s golf team. She is the only head coach the program’s ever had. Nadia led the team to the Patriot League Championship three times, earning her first win in 2021. She’s been Patriot League Coach of the Year three times.
