Dad jokes, puppy plunge, Annapolis 2 Bermuda race...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Normally driving over the Bay Bridge isn’t a pleasure but last night the sunset was beautiful and perfectly aligned with the bridge towers. I’d have snapped a pic for you but a) I was driving and b) phones never capture those moments fully anyway.

Let’s get to it.

—Ryan Sneddon & Rebecca Kraybill

Thank you. See you tonight 🎉

To all of you who bought tickets, sponsored, volunteered, or are working for Scoop’s Third Anniversary Party tonight, thank you. I especially want to thank our amazing vendors Kate Slayton Lettering (who does our signs), Always Ice Cream Company and Stephanie Squires (who do our dessert), and Ken’s Creative Kitchen (who do our amazing food and bars). All four of those are excellent local businesses and I can’t recommend them highly enough.

THE DIGEST

2024 Teacher of the Year 🍎

Nominations are now open for AACPS’ 2024 Teacher of the Year award. Here’s how it works: Principals nominate teachers from their schools until September. Then the nominees fill out their own application. A selection committee names the semi-finalists in December and then it’s on to Round 2. Scoop says all teachers are Teachers of the Year, so please accept this award → đŸĽ‡đŸŚ

Looking back: Annapolis High School’s Mary Kay Connerton earned 2023 AACPS Teacher of the Year. St. Mary’s High School’s Pamela Hernick earned 2023 Independent Schools Teacher of the Year.

The event was founded in 1979 by members of the Eastport Yacht Club and follows a challenging course of inshore and offshore racing. Learn more.

If you’ve been feeling crowded at your normal dink spot, check out the PutAway before the secret gets out! They’ve got 7 indoor courts, changing rooms and showers, and plenty of seating for between games.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Dad jokes but not from your dad 🤣

LOL Annapolis returns to the Crowne Plaza tonight (Friday) at 8 PM with headliner Luke Thayer and opener Adam Gabel. Luke’s been featured on MTV, College Humor, Funny or Die, and more. Preview his riffs on fatherhood (“parenting is kind of like cardio”) here. And get tickets here.

🦀 CRAB Cup to support accessible boating

It’s the largest fundraiser of the year for Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating. 90+ sailboats compete in a family-friendly race during the day. Then a Shore Party kicks off at 4 PM at Eastport Yacht Club with food from Boatyard Bar & Grill and live music from Misspent Youth. This is a two-time winner of local Fundraiser of the Year so you know it’s a good time. Saturday (8/19). Get party tickets here.

🐟 Maryland Seafood Festival

Oysters, crab soup, beer – what’s not to love? The 55th annual Maryland Seafood Festival takes place at City Dock this weekend with loads of seafood vendors, local beer, and family fun. Park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for $10 with a pre-purchased voucher ($15 day of) and catch the free shuttle. Saturday (8/19) and Sunday (8/20). Get tickets here.

🐕 Puppy Plunge

When humans compete to eat pie, it’s kinda gross. When dogs compete to eat pie, well, that’s paw-sitively adorable. Come for the puppies and stay for the pie at the annual SPCA Puppy Plunge. There’s live music, food trucks, a tiki bar, local vendors, and the aforementioned doggie pie-eating contest (12:30 PM, must register on site). River access puts the “plunge” in Puppy Plunge. Sunday (8/20) 11 AM–2 PM at Camp Letts in Edgewater. $10/car with all proceeds benefiting SPCA.

🎻 Annapolis Chamber Music Festival

Two chances to get classy with classical music this weekend. Journey through music from the Western Hemisphere alongside specially curated wines (Saturday 8/19 at Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis, 7:30 PM). Or enjoy an afternoon of works inspired by the ocean (Sunday 8/20 at St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3 PM). Get tickets here.

Nothing in this section is sponsored. They're just the things you need to know. I'll always let you know when something's sponsored.

EXTRA SPRINKLES

Back to School Blues? Think Again! 🚀

Hey there, parents! The school bell's about to ring and we know that sinking feeling — the kids aren't exactly jumping for joy (although maybe you are!). Why do we accept that school has to be painful and boring? Acton Academy Annapolis is rewriting the rulebook: Passive sitting and listening --> Hands-on projects. Limited recess --> Lots of outdoor play. School like a factory --> School like an adventure! Ready to rediscover a love of learning? Click here to learn more.*

Summer’s not over… ☀️

Continue summer fun with 4 weeks of great music – from rock to funk to hip-hop. It’s time for the September Concert Series by the Annapolis Maritime Museum. Four Thursdays in September at the Park Campus, right by the Bay. Concerts are free; however, donations are gratefully accepted. All proceeds from beverage sales will support the museum’s education program. Great nights for an even better cause.*

Casting Care 🎣

It’s a beautiful day, the sun is out on Chesapeake Bay, you and your friends on a boat catching fish, and you’re doing it for a good cause? Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it’s not! Fish For A Cure (F4AC) is a great day of fishing and fundraising for the Cancer Survivorship Program at LHAAMC’s Geaton and JoAnn DeCaris Cancer Institute. Are you hooked? Register today.*
