THE DIGEST

Grammar police make citizen’s arrest

M-i-s-s-i-s-s-i-p-p-i. B-r-o-c-c-o-l-i. A-n-n-a-p-p-o-l-i-s. One of these is spelled wrong, did you catch it? (There’s an extra “p” in Annapolis.) That same typo was printed across an Annapolis Police Department vehicle and the grammar police 👮 started to notice. After getting lots of attention, the department explained itself: the car was thriftily repaired with the door from another vehicle after an accident.

The cruiser is being re-wrapped, but now that it’s gone we’ll miss it.

Army-Navy exclusive interview: Head Coach Brian Newberry 🎙️

It’s hard to imagine a better person to have on the Anchors Aweigh Podcast two days before Army-Navy than the head football coach. Navy insiders Bill Wagner and Pete Medhurst got an exclusive interview with Coach Newberry on the latest episode of our Anchors Aweigh Podcast. Listen here to get Coach New’s take on the 2023 season, lessons learned, and the future of Navy football.

Tuberville yields, Davids is in

When one door closes, another one opens. Or in this case, when one stubborn Senator gives up a near year-long blockade, 425 doors open. Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville has been blocking military promotions to protest abortion policies for 10 months now. But he finally relented on all but the most senior promotions.

Now that the Senate approved those 425 promotions, Rear Admiral Yvette Davids can be installed as the first female Superintendent of the Naval Academy. We’re not sure if she’ll be installed by the Navy-Army game but she’ll surely be cheering “Go Navy Beat Army” regardless. ($)

LOCAL BUSINESS

12 more business owners complete IVP

The Inclusive Ventures Program (IVP) helps small, minority-owned, woman-owned, and Veteran-owned businesses grow in Anne Arundel County. Last Friday, the ninth cohort graduated and received their $5,000 for working capital for participating.

At the ceremony, IVP graduate Jeremiah Batucan’s business Peake Social was named Business of the Year. His adult sports league showed 100% year-to-year growth and contributed over $17,000 to local nonprofits last year.

IVP has helped create hundreds of new jobs and generate millions in revenue. AAEDC will host four sessions in 2024. One session will even offer a Spanish language version!

From the minds that brought Reclaimed to Annapolis

Have you visited Reclaimed on Main Street? It’s a terrific store with home decor you won’t find anywhere else. The owners, Mark and Tracey Miller, are opening another store today, just in time for Midnight Madness. At the Boathouse you’ll find contemporary and Mid-Century modern furniture, marine & nautical salvage, and other luxury home decor.

Check out the Boathouse at the ribbon cutting at noon today. Or just wait until Midnight Madness. It’s located at 36 Market Space in the former Sperry store. RIP 😢

General anesthesia isn't required and you'll go home shortly after your procedure. You don't have to live uncomfortably. Click here to learn more.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Can’t Miss: Midnight Madness

Today is one of the most fun nights of the year downtown. Shops stay open late, serve refreshments (some with alcohol), and the Alpaca International store on Main Street brings in real alpacas. It’s a total blast and feels like something out of a cheesy Christmas movie you pretend to hate but secretly love.

‘Tis the Seasoning for Giving 🎁

These two Santa-themed charity events brighten the holidays for the less fortunate among us.

Santa on the Trail
Santa’s coming to the B&A Trail on Saturday (12/9) from 10 AM-3 PM! Bring non-perishable food items to support the Anne Arundel County Food Bank. See the scheduled stops here. 🛑

☔️ If it rains, park rangers will collect food items. Call 410-222-6141 for more info.

⚓️ + 🎅🏻 +🏃‍= Annapolis Santa Run
Each year, the Annapolis Santa Run gathers gifts all around Annapolis. Their mission? Brighten Christmas morning for our neighbors in need. This year’s event takes place on Sunday (12/10) and goes from 3-7:30 PM. Check the schedule so you can contribute presents. Times may vary due to weather and traffic. Santa visits in rain or snow, but apparently “not a Buffalo snow or ice.” Even Santa has his limits.

CIVIL NEWS

Affordable housing bill scales back

The county’s bill for a new affordable housing program just got a haircut. ✂️ Originally, the bill only required that applicants seeking affordable housing meet the income requirement. This week, County Council scaled it back. Now, the bill requires applicants to live and work in the county. If passed, the legislation will require developers to set aside 15% of the units for affordable housing in certain new projects. ($)
