Biking and running and beer, how to boat without a boat, two business anniversaries...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. We goofed last week when writing about the skipjack Wilma Lee. We said it’s 47 feet long. It is not. The deck is 47 feet long, but nobody measures boats that way – especially when calculating dock fees. Wilma Lee is actually about 75 feet long.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Biking and running and beer 🚓 šŸƒ šŸ»

  • How to boat without a boat šŸ›„ļø

  • Two business anniversaries šŸŽ‚

Let’s get to it.

Redistricting meeting #2 complete

AACPS hosted its second (of three) public redistricting feedback meetings last Wednesday. The room was packed, mostly with Crofton and South River families. AACPS is weighing public feedback heavily during the redistricting process and the public is heavily weighing in. The online portal’s seen almost 30,000 unique visitors and logged almost 10,000 responses since February 1. Comments will be accepted through May 15. And there’s one more meeting on April 29 at Annapolis Middle School. ($)

What’s the story behind City Dock’s bug billboard?

Ever wondered what a dead bug’s doing on a billboard in the heart of Annapolis’ most prime real estate? It’s actually more interesting than it sounds. Billboards aren’t technically allowed in Annapolis and it’s the only one. Because like many things in town, it’s historic, too. Rick Hutzell (Baltimore Banner) has the full story. ($)

LOCAL BUSINESS

Bloomstone Jewelers celebrates one year in business šŸ’

Fewer anniversaries in business are more exciting than the first. There’s just something about making it a whole 365 days – or 366 on a leap year. That’s why we’re thrilled for Bloomstone Jewelers, a lab-grown diamond store at the Harbour Center with stunning diamonds. To celebrate one year in business, they’re giving everyone 20% off through April 19. Visit them at 2548 Solomons Island Road, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Homestead Gardens celebrates 15 years in Severna Park

Davidsonville gets most of the credit for Homestead Gardens. Makes sense since it’s almost a quarter million square feet and has been there since the 80s. But don’t sleep on the Severna Park location, especially if you live a hop, skip, and a jump from Davidsonville. Homestead Gardens is celebrating 15 years in Severna Park this week with an open house tomorrow (4/15) from 4–6 PM. And yes, they have Christmas trains in Severna Park, too. 522 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, MD 21146.

Born After 1980? Here's Your 10-Point Guide to Investing

If you were born in the 1980s or ’90s, chances are you have a busy life with mounting financial responsibilities. Maybe you have student loans, a mortgage, or even young children to care for. While it may seem decades away, saving for retirement is something that should be getting as important as driving your kids to soccer practice or a trip to the grocery store.

While knowing putting money away for your future self is important, many people your age can’t help but wonder if they’re doing it correctly – or how to start. Read this guide from Scarborough Capital Management for 10 points to consider.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

It’s cruising season in Annapolis

Hello, friends. Spring has stirred from its winter nap, and in Annapolis, that only means one thing: boats are back. Like old friends returning home, they fill our harbor with color, life, and just the right amount of chaos. So grab your deck shoes, sunglasses, and your favorite boating hat – boating season is officially underway in the Sailing Capital of America.

Don’t have your own boat (or better yet, any friends with one)? Here are a few ways you can still enjoy our waters.

⛵ Wilma Lee. The Annapolis Maritime Museum sails this 74-foot skipjack for Wednesday Night Racing, sunset cruises, heritage cruises, and special events.

⛵ Woodwind I, II. These twin schooners sail from the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel every night of the week as well as many races.

ā›“ļø Watermark. This tour company operates many boats around Annapolis with daily cruises ranging from around Spa Creek all the way to St. Michaels.

šŸš• Water taxi. Also operated by Watermark. This is one of the most fun ways to get around Annapolis. Service starts this weekend.

šŸ›„ļø Darling. A relative newcomer to Annapolis’ charter boat scene. Darling is a beautiful picnic boat available for charter every day of the week for evening, afternoon, or even morning charters.

Forward Run Club & Bike Club

This is for the friend who always says, ā€œI worked out this morningā€ before chowing down on a huge double cheeseburger. Did you know Forward Brewing Bike Club on Tuesdays and Run Club on Wednesdays? Bike Club starts with a 10-mile ride from Forward to beautiful Bay Ridge and ends with beer. Run Club starts with a 5k run from Forward to downtown and ends with beer. All paces are welcome for both. Just wear something reflective! Both clubs start at 6 PM. 418 Fourth St, Annapolis, MD 21403.

Annapolis MLK Jr. Parade rescheduled for soggy weather

Because this weekend was a great one for staying inside and reading a book, not parading in the streets, the City of Annapolis moved the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and Festival to May 10. The parade starts at Amos Garrett Blvd and West Street and ends at People’s Park. The African Diaspora Festival will be at the park from 12–4 PM.
