Civic-Minded Education Is Important, Not Just Today But Every Day

At St. Anne’s School, we take a unique approach to civic-minded education. What does this approach look like? Instead of shying away from issues, students are equipped with the skills they need to have civil discourse about challenging topics–a key component of our curriculum that we discuss in the most recent episode of The Satellite podcast. Here, we give students voice and choice at every age–from Preschool where students vote on what animal or subject matter to study, to Middle School where students hold a Social Contract Convention to agree on a set of guiding principles by which students will abide. And at every grade level, students are provided with ample opportunities for civic engagement and service learning–both of which are baked right into the curriculum.

As parents head to the polls today to exercise one of their most important civic duties, it is important to think about preparing the next generation to be active participants in a healthy democracy. Learn more about how St. Anne’s School equips students to be engaged, respectful, and civic-minded citizens at the K-8 Open House this Friday, November 8 from 9:30–11:00 AM.

THE DIGEST

Voting Registration Correction 🗳️

If you read the Scoop yesterday, we stated that voter registration closed on October 15. While that’s true for online registration, you can still head to your polling place today and sign up to make your voice heard! Thanks to Scoop reader Deborah for pointing this out to us. Just remember:

• Bring something that shows where you live (a utility bill or recent bank statement is great)

• Bring your ID (MVA-issued driver’s license or passport)

We’d love to see Scoop readers getting out the vote — don’t forget to tag @NaptownScoop with your “I Voted” sticker!

Apply for ABIG grants 🌾

Farmers don’t just have to worry about weather, soil, and crop health . . . it also takes a lot of cash to keep a farm-based business running steadily. So if you’re in agriculture and looking to expand your operations, consider applying for the Agricultural Business Improvement Grant (ABIG) Program this month.

Applications are open now through November 30, and you could get a matching grant of up to $10K to fund approved projects. Think: fencing, livestock, plant stock, equipment, and infrastructure upgrades. Eligible applicants must own or operate a farm in Anne Arundel County that is agriculturally tax assessed by the State of Maryland. Learn more and apply.

Slow down, you’re on camera 🚙

Time to pump the brakes. As of last week, 5 more AACPS elementary and middle schools have speed cameras to deter fast driving in front of buildings where kids are coming and going throughout the day. Schools with new cameras are:

🏫 Lindale Middle School, Linthicum
🏫 Hillsmere Elementary, Annapolis
🏫 Seven Oaks Elementary, Odenton
🏫 Belvedere Elementary, Arnold
🏫 Brooklyn Park Middle School, Brooklyn Park

After a 15-day warning period, any drivers going 12mph+ over the speed limit will get a $40 ticket. Drive safely, folks!

So if you need new shades or trendy local gifts for the holidays, be sure to visit before New Year’s Eve (psst … everything is marked 10-75% off right now). 😎

You don’t need medicine. You need to stretch.

Don’t take it from us. Take it from the Washington Post. As reported by health and wellness columnist Gretchen Reynolds, “If your body is flexible, you’re likely to live longer than someone whose body and joints are tight and rigid, according to the first, large-scale study of the links between flexibility and mortality.” In the study by Claudio Gil S. Araujo, 3,139 men and women between ages 46 and 65 completed an evaluation of overall flexibility. Researchers followed them for more than a decade. They found that people with the stiffest joints — especially women — were substantially more likely to die prematurely than those with greater flexibility. Assisted stretching decreases pain, improves posture and mobility, and increases longevity. One Scoop reader said StretchMed Annapolis literally changed his life. So what are you waiting for? Book your no-cost intro stretch today.

Military Family Appreciation Month 🇺🇸

DYK, November is Military Family Appreciation Month? Anne Arundel County Public Library is offering many events during November at local libraries to celebrate and honor military families. There’s letter writing to troops, storytimes, crafting, historical discussions, musical events, and so much more. See the list of events.

Clear English Ivy, Save Trees 🌳

The Watershed Stewards Academy is seeking volunteers to help clear English Ivy from the trees in Truxtun Park. The invasive vine slowly kills trees by stealing nutrients and causing rot, and is a known forest killer in Maryland. To date, the Academy’s Save Our Trees program has saved over 5,000 trees, and they need your help on Saturday, November 9 from 9:45 AM-noon to tackle the problem locally. No experience is necessary, but gardening gloves are advised. Meet at the basketball courts behind Pip Moyer.

Bay Bridge Run: Necessary Info for Non-Runners 🏃

Over 10,000 runners are planning on running, jogging, and walking Prancercising (Go ahead – Google it.) over the Chesapeake Bay on Sunday, November 10 for the Bay Bridge Run. And while the annual race is legit one of the most exhilarating experiences ever, if you’re a not a runner and are instead, perhaps, a driver, the morning can be a little less than ideal. If you’re planning on being in your car on Sunday, here’s what you need to know.

  • Runners will be setting off on the eastbound span in heats of 2,000. The eastbound span will close at midnight on Saturday night and re-open at 2pm on Sunday.

  • During this time, traffic on the westbound lane will be two-way, so expect slower drive times.

  • In Stevensville, the Route 8 exit to the bridge will be closed at the overpass. If you’re headed toward the western shore, hop on Route 50 from Duke Street.

  • The Stevensville business park is hosting the post-race celebration, with buses and transport vehicles coming in and out. If you can avoid this area, that’s probably your best bet. However, the celebrations are open to the public, so party on.

  • But don’t party too hard. Shuttles are available for racers only, so be responsible and expect a heightened police presence.

Budweiser Clydesdales to headline the Military Bowl Parade 🏈 🐴
