Viral restaurant video, Naval Academy change of leadership ceremony, something for our golfing readers...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Did you hear about the Annapolis man who ordered Maryland style crabcakes while on vacation on the Outer Banks? The judge sentenced him to 30 years without Old Bay and a lifetime ban from the Boatyard Bar & Grill.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Viral restaurant video

  • Naval Academy change of leadership ceremony

  • Something for our golfing readers

Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST

Do you know these landmarks?

Photo: Downtown Annapolis Partnership

Large-letter postcards (what inspired the above billboard) were all the rage in the 30s, 40s, and 50s. They aren’t so popular now, but we absolutely love what Historic Annapolis did with this billboard at City Dock. For those keeping track, it’s definitely better than the giant dead bug.

Now, who knows all the landmarks? Keep your score and scroll down for answers and fun facts.

For scoring, we’re taking a page out of Cracker Barrel’s book.

  • Name all 9 and you’re the mayor now

  • Name 7 or 8? Time to apply for a tour guide job with Watermark.

  • Name 5 or 6? Nobody will mistake you for a tourist, but you’re clearly not a lifer, either.

  • Name 2, 3, or 4? You’re just here for the crabcakes.

  • Name 0 or 1? Definitely from DC. It’s fine. We’ll still let you park in Eastport. . . if you can find it.

A: Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse. A full-time keeper lived on it at all times until 1986.

N: St. Anne’s Church. One of the original 30 Anglican parishes in the province (not state) of Maryland.

N: William Paca House & Garden. Mr. Paca himself designed almost the entire thing.

A: Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum. Might be the toughest on this list. Harriet Tubman’s name was added to the masthead last November.

P: Black-eyed Susan. Maryland’s state flower since 1918. Also known as rudbeckia hirta or yellow coneflower.

O: Skipjack Wilma Lee. Dredged the Bay for oysters for 55 years. Was converted to a pleasure boat in the 90s. Now does daily tours and charters for the Annapolis Maritime Museum.

L: Naval Academy Chapel. One of 12 National Historic Landmarks in Anne Arundel County. John Paul Jones (the Father of the American Navy) is buried in the basement (in probably the coolest crypt ever).

I: Shoreline. As far as I can tell, this isn’t anywhere particular. Think of it like a free space in Bingo.

S: Main Street & State House. A digital illustration inspired by an iconic photo by travel and landscape photographer Sean Pavone.

Good Morning America filming in Annapolis on Thursday 🎬

Annapolis is getting ready for its close-up! Good Morning America is rolling into town for its “America the Beautiful: 50 States in 50 Weeks” series. Annapolis is its seventh stop, as the series films in the order the states joined the Union. This Thursday, correspondent Morgan Norwood will visit historic Middleton Tavern to sample Maryland crabcakes and orange crush mocktails with owner Sophia Hardesty. Before you ask . . . filming is closed to the public. Middleton’s was chosen for its rich history — it opened in 1750 and once welcomed George Washington and Benjamin Franklin.

Morgan will also chat with Maryland Park Service Director Angela Crenshaw — recently named Maryland Woman of the Year for her environmental rights and African American history advocacy. Angela helped open the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park in Dorchester County.

Leadership change at AMM

After 12.5 years at the helm, Alice Estrada is stepping down as President and CEO of the Annapolis Maritime Museum and Park. Her tenure has been incredibly fruitful both with intangible results like making AMM one of the most well-known nonprofits in town and tangible ones like increasing revenue and student participation sixfold, securing over $5 million in funding for capital improvements, acquiring both a 12-acre park (the Park Campus) and the skipjack Wilma Lee, along with many awards and industry recognitions.

  • It’s unclear what’s next for Alice or who will replace her.

Borgschulte to relieve Davids on Friday

Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Yvette Davids will be properly relieved by Lt. Gen. Michael J. Borgschulte in a change of command ceremony on Friday. It is invite-only but will be streamed at 2 PM for those interested.

  • The Naval Academy Superintendent is similar to a president or chancellor at a civilian university.

In an unusual break from protocol, Davids (Class of 1989) won’t be doing whatever it is retired admirals do. While being superintendent is a terminal post by law (which means you retire when it’s over), she’s been nominated to serve as the next Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Operations, Plans, Strategy, and Warfighting Development at the Pentagon.

Borgschulte (Class of 1991), meanwhile, is crossing his fingers for a helicopter ride to avoid 95/beltway traffic as he leaves his post as Deputy Commandant for Manpower and Reserve Affairs at Marine Corps Base Quantico.

Basement Steps Looking Rough? We’ll Handle It.

They’re not glamorous, but basement steps still matter — especially when they’re covered in grime, mildew, or slippery green stuff. Nobody wants to go to the ER after falling down the steps.

Blue Heron Property Services can change that. Their washing method removes grime without damaging your surfaces — no streaks, no cracks, no pressure washer gouges. Just clean, safe steps that make the whole space feel cared for again. Annapolis homeowners trust Blue Heron to handle the dirty work.
