Good morning, Annapolis. I just want to give a shoutout to all of Scoop’s Super Fans. You make us happy :)

Let’s get to it.

A review of our scavenger hunt from last year’s Team Explorer

“Last year’s hunt was a highlight of the year for our family. I thought our kids would tire out but we spent the whole weekend on it! Plotting, laughing, racing, boating, and eating our way around town. We did things we never would have tried on our own. We might not have won it (yet!) but we walked away with dozens of memories and family stories to tell for years to come.” —Team Explorer

Publisher’s note: Team Explorer loved the scavenger hunt so much they made one for me a few weeks later. They even drew a picture to celebrate. Thanks Cora and Julia!

THE DIGEST

The Paddington Bear connection you might not know

Paddington Bear loves marmalade sandwiches, is always dressed for rain, and can’t stay out of trouble. Kids love him. And you have a former Annapolis resident to thank for that – illustrator R.W. Alley.

R.W. started drawing for the Paddington series in 1997. Although he no longer lives locally, he’s releasing a new book that honors the Annapolis Fire Department, Firefighters to the Rescue!

The inspiration is quite personal. Both his father (a former Naval Academy professor) and mother were killed in a 2007 Annapolis house fire. It took 50 firefighters to put out the fire. His book draws on that experience and from it, R.W. hopes kids will see how we can work together. ($)

Trivia time: The illustrator of another famous fuzzy bear still calls Annapolis home. Do you know which? Answer at the bottom of the newsletter.

Fannie Lou Hamer Award winners revealed

“Get up and try to do something.” —Fannie Lou Hamer circa 1964

Hamer was one of the most powerful voices of the civil rights movement. And her legacy lives on. The Fannie Lou Hamer Awards honor Anne Arundel County leaders in civil and human rights. The 28th award reception is on October 1 from 4–6 PM at St. Phillips Episcopal Church. Get your tickets here.

Congrats to these honorees who live out Fannie’s words every day: Courtney Buiniskis, Delores M. Bullock, Renee Cantori, Betsy L. Harris-Dotson, Everdean P. Holloway, Bridget E. Hutchins, Lamiya Kirby, Adriana Lee, and Renee Mutchnik. Click here to learn more about the honorees. ($)

The gift that keeps on giving singing

$100,000? Now that’s something to sing about. The Annapolis Chorale just received the biggest single donation of its 50-year history. That’s thanks to a 77-year-old Severna Park resident named David Herron.

David’s a veteran singer with the choir and his generous donation (paired with a 25% estate gift to Live Arts Maryland) will help the chorale in its 50th anniversary season.

LOCAL BUSINESS

PNC closing 6 grocery store branches

If you love to multitask (e.g. grocery shop AND cash checks), I have some bad news for you. PNC Bank just closed 6 branches inside Giant Food grocery stores. The closures are in Giants in Edgewater, Glen Burnie, Annapolis, Odenton, Pasadena, and Severna Park. Don’t worry, the Giants are still open, as are standalone PNC locations, just not these in-store banks.

Messy play is critical for young children’s sensory development. But as busy parents know, it can be a pain to set up, and an even bigger pain to clean up, which makes saying “Yes!” to the mess challenging. However, research shows there are boundless benefits to messy play. What are they? Read this article written by St. Anne’s School of Annapolis educator, Vicky Hiller, to find out.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Bet you didn’t know we had this

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater is a 2,650-acre campus of forests, wetlands, marshes, and 15 miles of protected shoreline. I always learn things while writing Scoop, but this one made me pause and say, “Really?! That’s cool!” If you’re curious like me, you can take a free tour of SERC’s campus and learn about the research that happens there. The next tour is Wednesday (9/20) at 9:30 AM.
