THE DIGEST

The Great Chesapeake Bay Swim 🌊

A lot of folks are not too keen on driving across the Chesapeake Bay, but what about swimming across? This Sunday (6/9), a bunch of elite swimmers will attempt the 4.4 mile journey from Annapolis to Kent Island. The Great Chesapeake Bay Swim starts at 9:30 AM, when swimmers will depart Sandy Point and head for Libbey’s Coastal Kitchen on the other side of the Bay. Although registration is closed for the main swim, there are still spots open for the 1-mile challenge beginning at 8:30 AM. The event benefits March of Dimes, the Chesapeake Bay Trust, the US Coast Guard, and other local charities.

Register of Wills pleads guilty

Erica Griswold, Anne Arundel County’s Register of Wills, pleaded guilty this week to cashing a check intended to pay a citizen’s inheritance tax. When an heir or creditor receives an inheritance after someone dies, they owe inheritance tax. This tax is collected by the Register of Wills’ office for the state. But when Griswold received an inheritance tax check made out to her $6,645, she allegedly cashed it and didn’t repay it for months. As a condition of her guilty plea, Griswold will avoid prison time but will do 50 hours of community service and may have a probation period. ($)

Fondue you like our new look? 🧀

Melting Pot in Annapolis is the latest of the famous fondue franchise’s locations to get a makeover. The redesign gives the restaurant — which has operated in Annapolis since 2002 — an open floor plan, plus new finishes on everything from seating upholstery to artwork on the wall. Stop by 2348 Solomons Island Road, Annapolis, MD to see for yourself. Scoop Intern Ella went to the redesign reveal party Tuesday night and couldn’t stop talking about the Ultimate Five-Course Experience in the office yesterday.

Beacon Square: What’s the deal? 🛒

Any of you who drive on Riva Road even occasionally have noticed something big happening. How big? Well, Beacon Square is a 13-acre mixed-use property with plans for lots of great retail and a 93,000-square-foot grocery store, 428 retail parking spaces, 508 apartments, and a huge outdoor space. Not much has been released about the project. But that’s where John Rosso, principal of Rosso Commercial Real Estate Services and friend of the Scoop and owner of an immaculate head of hair, came in. He gave us the full scoop on what to expect. Click for some juicy and FRESH tea. ☕️

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Timber Pizza Co. is coming to Annapolis 🍕

Chris Brady, co-founder and president of Timber Pizza Co., announced yesterday that a new location of the popular DC-based pizza chain will be coming to Annapolis at 192 West Street. This is the space between Sailor Oyster Bar and the Hilton Garden Inn.

Chris is as local as they come. He lives here, he went to St. Mary’s High School, and had his first job at the Market House. Ten years after opening Timber’s first DC location, he’s excited to sling Timber’s famous pies in his hometown. Timber will be at Bands in the Sand again this year if you want a sneak peek and are lucky enough to have tickets. They haven’t announced an official opening date yet, but we heard it could be as early as this summer.

Quick Tip: When they do open, Timber’s Michelin Guide review advises, “Those in the know order a half and half to explore the wide variety of pizzas, available in red, white or green sauce pies.” We can’t wait!
