Good morning, Annapolis. Did you know Washington is the most common county name in the USA? 31 states have a county named Washington. Washington state isn’t one of them but Maryland is.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • New way to find volunteer opportunities

  • Vintage Views at ATC

  • Who’s going to be the SMOB?

Let’s get to it.

P.S. Happy birthday to Michael Carter! 🍰

Modern waterfront living 🌊

Do you ever pass by a home and think, “Wow! That is truly one in a million?” This contemporary showstopper on Fishing Creek overlooking the Bay is one of those.

It’s not just the desirable location near Thomas Point Park. Its two-story living room flooded with natural light and the rare rooftop terrace with endless Bay views.

It has a chef’s kitchen with granite counters and top-of-the-line appliances. There’s a fireplace in the living room to warm up the typically cool contemporary atmosphere.

On the main level, there's an office with its own bathroom. Upstairs, two spacious bedrooms share another bathroom.

This home is perfect for year-round living, or weekend getaways! And with over 1,000 square feet of exterior living space, you’ll always be close to the water.

THE DIGEST

A timely warning system 📱

On February 29, police swarmed Annapolis’ capital complex in search of a threat made via anonymous phone call. Thankfully, none was found; but many people were warned by word of mouth and waited with little info for hours during the lockdown. The next morning, Senate President Bill Ferguson announced a contract for a text alert system for nearby cell phones around the complex. Testing may start this weekend. ($)

Introducing the Nonprofit Events Hub

Fellow Blue Zones fans know volunteering can improve your life, health, and happiness. So you’ll be happy to learn about the newly launched Nonprofit Events Hub (NEH) – an online tool designed to connect county residents with local nonprofits. You can search for events by date and category to support the causes you love most.

Disclaimer: the NEH is in a testing phase. The Nonprofit Center will monitor it over the next few months to determine if it will become permanent. Local nonprofits can submit free or low-cost events or workshops.

Calling all shutterbugs of the Chesapeake 📸

Here’s something for those with a talent for photography and a love of nature — the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s annual Save the Bay Photo Contest is now open. Photographers of all skill levels can enter their best work highlighting the beauty and character of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top photos! Submissions are open through March 29. Entry guidelines.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Coastal Kitchen + Bath opens

The best kitchens and bathrooms are beautiful and functional. Coastal Kitchen + Bath specializes in products and services that do both. Celebrate their grand opening with a ribbon cutting this Thursday at 3:30PM (3/7) at 504 Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard, Severna Park, Maryland 21146.

Vintage Views Joins Annapolis Town Center 🍸

Annapolis Town Center has a new tenant. Vintage Views Bar is a locally-owned, mobile bar and beverage catering company that you may recognize from previous Annapolis Town Center events – most notably, the Holly Jolly Hideaway. Now instead of an occasional presence, Vintage Views will host quarterly pop-ups at ATC starting this April! We can’t wait to see what they mix up.

Tractor Supply Co. is coming to Edgewater

Big news. Tractor Supply Company is coming to town. If you haven’t been, don’t let the name fool you. It’s not just for farmers. Tractor Supply sells flowers, clothes, pet supplies and so much more. TSC will take over the former Kmart in the South River Colony shopping center. It’s been vacant since 2020 but renovations for the 33,000-square foot store will start soon. The company expects to open the store in September. ($)

Spring is in the air 🍀

You know that neighbor who had the perfect green lawn last summer? They started preparing for that in spring, likely with Lawn Doctor. Let me explain.

Winter is rough on grass. Cold makes it go dormant, kind of like a hibernating bear. Lawn Doctor’s spring care programs use tried and true methods like essential fertilization to control spring weeds and bare patches to rejuvenate your grass and protect it from future damage.

And their expertise doesn’t stop there. They’ll even give you mowing techniques so your grass will be the envy of the neighborhood all summer long. Get your free quote today!

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

VIP tix for Bands in the Sand available today

How serious are you about having a good time at Bands in Sand? 🤘 VIP and Committee tickets go live today at 9 AM. So, if you want to experience this music fest in the best way possible (think on-site parking and a VIP lounge), here’s your chance. GA tickets go live May 1.

Reminder: Bands in the Sand combines live music, all-you-can-eat food, and an open bar on the beach of the Phillip Merrill Environmental Center. It’s set for the evening of June 8 and raises money for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. This year’s lineup includes the premier Jimmy Buffett tribute band The Landsharks, ‘80s cover band Misspent Youth, and reggae group Jah Works.

Annapolis Running Festival

If you’ve got the urge to run this weekend, there’s still time to join the 2nd annual Annapolis Running Festival. Spots for the 10K have sold out, but the half marathon and 5K are still available. All races start and finish at Navy Stadium — the half marathon and 10K at 7 AM and the 5K at 7:15 AM.

📍 Where do the races go? (So non-runners can avoid the traffic?) The courses go through downtown Annapolis, tracing Rowe Boulevard and Main Street. The 10K and half marathon continue down Randall Street to King George Street to Route 450 over the Naval Academy Bridge. That’s where the 10K turns around, but the half marathon goes up to Boulters Way and down the B&A Trail to Joyce Lane.

The position can be held in a nonprofit, government or for-profit organization. Just be sure to nominate by March 15. If you plan to attend the breakfast, register here.
