THE DIGEST
What do Scoopâs readers want to replace Mission BBQ and Jimmy Johnâs?
We ran a survey last week and we got some great answers. The most popular request was healthy food or salads with 16% of the vote. Sweetgreen dominated when brands were mentioned. Second place was a small grocer with 12% of the vote. Third was Black Market Bakers with 8%. Close behind was âanother sub shop.â
For all who requested that, try the Big Cheese. Itâs literally steps from Mission BBQâs spot. Our favorite one-vote answers were Naptown Scoop headquarters, an old-fashioned butcher shop, and a JosĂŠ AndrĂŠs restaurant.
Mo Gaba Positivity and Perseverance Award Recipients đ
Mo Gaba was an AACPS student whose health challenges never defeated his brilliance, positive attitude, or fun-loving spirit. He was so inspiring that AACPS distributes awards annually to students who embody those characteristics.
Della Wark, Riley Creese, Kenneth Avila-Sanchez, and Shanna Hector are the 2024 recipients of the Mo Gaba Positivity and Perseverance Awards. Taryn Reinhart of Annapolis High School is the 2024 Mo Gaba Legacy Award Winner.
You can hear their stories in this video. Theyâll be formally recognized at the BOEâs Feb 7 meeting. Their schools will receive a banner and $500 for an initiative promoting kindness and positivity.

Shianiyahâs off to Scotland
Up until now, Shianiyah Johnson hasnât left the country. But thatâs changing this summer. Thanks to a prestigious scholarship from the Annapolis and Anne Arundel Scholarship Trust, Shianiyahâs heading to Scotland all-expenses-paid. Sheâll enroll at Gordonstoun International Summer School during July and August to study whatever she wants â from humanities to entrepreneurship! Join us in wishing Shianiyah, âTuras math dhut!â (Thatâs Scottish Gaelic for âGood journey to you!â) ($)

LOCAL BUSINESS
Naptown Scoop is hiring
I quit my job in 2020 with no plan and a big dream. Start a business and never have a âreal jobâ again. Mission accomplished so far. I like to think of Naptown Scoop as my entrepreneurial pirate ship, sailing away from Corporate America. We have 9 people on the crew now with room for one more. So just like Jack Sparrow, weâve sailed into Tortuga to grow our crew.
Weâre looking for a sales rep to handle new business outreach or the entire sales process from start to finish if youâre ready. As always at Scoop, hunger and drive are more important than experience. So go ahead and apply even if you donât fit the typical sales mold. â Ryan
The Village at Providence Point moves forward
Helpful context: National Lutheran Communities & Services has been trying to build a retirement community off Forest Drive (where it meets Spa Road) for over a decade. A group called the Crab Creek Conservancy has opposed it since the beginning. The last holdup came when the Conservancy appealed a variance from the Annapolis Planning Commission to clear old growth trees on the site. Upon appeal, Circuit Court Judge Mark Crooks asked the Commission for more detail.
After reviewing the Commissionâs revised reasoning, Judge Crooks upheld the variance on Friday. The Crab Creek Conservancy does have 30 days to appeal again, but National Lutheran sales director William Hotchkiss doesnât expect further challenges. At this time, the Village at Providence Point sales center is open for tours and accepting deposits.
Uptown Cheapskate announces move (new location TBD)
Thrifters and consigners, take note â February 4 is Uptown Cheapskateâs last day in the Festival at Riva shopping center. They havenât announced a new location yet but stay tuned. Weâll make sure youâre the first to know.

WHATâS HAPPENINâ
Bingo, Bags, and Botox to support Seahawks after-prom
Prom is fun, but the after-party is always just a little bit better. Hereâs your chance to help South River Highâs senior class have the best party possible â by buying tickets to the upcoming Bingo, Bags, and Botox fundraiser on February 24 at the American Legion in Edgewater. A $45 entry fee gets you 10 rounds of bingo, a dauber, chance at the door prize, and a drink. Plus, while youâre there, youâll have the chance to schedule Botox treatments with ProMD Health.
The Bernie House: Mardi Gras Ball đđđ
The 4th annual Mardi Gras Ball fundraiser for The Bernie House is slated for February 24 at the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel. If youâre unfamiliar with The Bernie House, Scoop loves that it changes the lives of domestic violence victims. Expect all the Mardi Gras standards like Cajun cuisine, mystical tarot card readings, festive face painting, and live music. So . . ."laissez les bons temps rouler." Thatâs French for: let the good times roll. Click here for tickets and sponsorship opportunities.

CIVIL NEWS
Starting over at Westgate Circle
Everyoneâs a critic. And nobody learned that harder than the City of Annapolis recently. The Annapolis Art in Public Places Commission wants to install something in Westgate Circle so everyone sees something interesting when heading downtown. The problem: There was a mini Internet rebellion when the three final sculptures were revealed. Even Pulitzer-winning art critic Jerry Saltz of New York Magazine shared his opinion. Now that all three options are off the table, itâs back to the drawing board. ($)
