Ring it on home, St. John’s 🔔

If you hear a bell ringing in the middle of the night between Saturday and Sunday, don’t worry — that’s just the St. John’s students. And yes, they have permission. Ringing the bell in McDowell Hall on St. John’s campus is a tradition for the students once they’ve submitted their senior essay, which is due this Saturday night. Each of the 120 students gets the chance at a celebratory peal of the bell once between midnight and 1:30 AM. The longstanding tradition is made possible by a special exemption to the city’s noise ordinance. You might say this is a tradition that lets St. John’s students declare they’re ding-dong-done with school.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Foodie Friday: Super Bowl Catering 🏈🍗🧀

The countdown is on — time to plan your Super Bowl menu. Whether you’re going potluck or catering (our pick), these places will get ideas flowing or more like mouths drooling . . . 🤤

LEO Annapolis is our MVP Saquon Barkley. The Leo Super Bowl Party Pack feeds 5–7 hungry partygoers and includes:

  • French Onion Dip (16oz) with house-made chili crunch

  • Truffled Buffalo Chicken Dip (16oz)

  • Bowtie Bison Chili (64oz) with cornbread

  • 12 Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls

  • 2 lbs of Pulled Pork + 12 slider buns with slaw

Place an order for pickup on gameday (February 9) at 212 West Street in Annapolis, between 3–4 PM.

Second string catering options? Buffalo Wild Wings is a no-brainer for the unofficial food of the Super Bowl, wings. Main & Market and Giolitti Delicatessen are always winners in our book. Sandwich fans can go to RegionAle (who’s offering 10% off your first catering order) or Full On. And for BBQ lovers, Red Hot & Blue or Mission BBQ. Most links = easy “add to cart.” You. Are. Welcome. 😋

Bakers Needed: Great Harvest is for sale

Like our daily loaf of sourdough, Great Harvest Bakery has been a staple in West Annapolis for the last 24 years. But now, owners Frank and Elvire Dembia (who bought the franchise in 2021) are looking to move on. The bakery is seeking new owners before its lease expires at the end of February. The Dembias invested heavily in renovating the bakery, including new equipment and renovating the 10-rack rotating oven. Hopefully some interested bakers will check out the business listing: we can’t imagine a Sunday morning without a Triple Berry Oat Bran muffin. ($)

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Ship Selection Night: February 6 ⚓️

The USNA Class of 2025 is ready to set sail on their Navy careers! At Ship Selection Night (Thursday, February 6 @ 6:15 PM in Alumni Hall), 240 future Surface Warfare Officers will chart their course after graduation by choosing their first ship and homeport from all over the world. Mids pick from available ship placards when their name is called. Selection depends on order of merit, rank within the Brigade, academics, conduct, and physical readiness. Sadly, it’s not open to the public — just families of Mids. But, you can livestream the event on YouTube. And Scoop will be there to give you a behind the scenes look.
