Tropical Storm Debby updates, Crabcake Review 8, Oyster Week recap

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. This is Naptown Scoop. Not to be a Debby the Down-pour, but we might get wet today. Stay safe, friends.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Annapolis prepares for Tropical Storm Debby ⛈️

  • Crabcake Review S3E8: At home! 🦀 🎂

  • Oyster Week Feature 5: Sailor Oyster Bar 🦪

Let’s get to it.

— Lauren Burke Meyer, Dylan Roche, Chelsea Harrison, & Ryan Sneddon

P.S. Happy birthday, Laurie Berman and early birthday, Darlene Bellinger! 🎂

Crabcake Review S4E8: Our first ever at-home review 🦀🦀🦀🦀

Y’all it’s another first. Yesterday, Captain Chris and his wife Jan kindly hosted us for our first at-home Crabcake Review. There was lots of baking and beer (a great palette cleanser, if you ask us). You don’t want to miss it! Watch Episode 8 for ratings of these local spots that all offer crabcakes you can cook at home:

  • Graul’s Market

  • Sam’s Club (for real 😂)

  • Whole Foods

  • Wild Country Seafood

Happy Hour: The Best Time of the Day

Picture this: you just got off of a long, stressful day at work, and you’re heading to meet your friends for apps and drinks. And since you're in Annapolis, why not sit by the water?

The Choptank is the best spot in Annapolis for delicious food, craft cocktails, and boat watching. And their happy hour is unbeatable with $4 beers, $7 wines, $8 house spirits, and a whole selection of appetizers, sandwiches, and oysters. Come unwind Monday through Friday, 3–6 at the Bar. Here’s the full happy hour menu!

THE DIGEST

Major Stories ☀️🦪

🌅 First, we rolled out Your Summer Bucket List to make the most of the ever-dwindling time until school starts. You’ll find the best upcoming events for music lovers, foodies, water-enthusiasts, families, and that’s just the beginning. So get checking items off and tag @NaptownScoop when you do! ✔️

⚓ Next, we welcomed Navy families for Plebe Parents’ Weekend, happening now through Aug 11. Welcome, Plebe Parents. 👋 We hope you get some good hugs and better seafood while you’re here.

🍽️ It’s also National Oyster Week, and we’re shellebrating! PSA: You can enjoy them in months that don’t end with ‘R” thanks to the modern miracle that is refrigeration. Great spots to oyster:

🦪 Middleton Tavern – The OG: Founder Jerry Hardesty claims to have invented the oyster shooter in 1968.
🦪 Boatyard Bar & Grill – The Local Hangout: Some of these cold, plump babies are sourced right down the road from Wild Country Seafood.
🦪 O’Brien’s Oyster Bar & Seafood Tavern – The Main Street Mainstay: It has been operating on Main Street since 1774 when it opened as the Rose & Crown Tavern.
🦪 The Choptank – Luxe with a View: Their oyster menu offers 8 varieties. Hang at the upstairs bar (or anywhere really) for a killer view.
🦪 Sailor Oyster Bar – The Comeback Kid: Details below ⬇️

Top clicks of the week 🏆

Oyster Feature 5: Sailor Oyster Bar – The Comeback Kid

Where did we go for Day 5? The (kind of) new kid on the block: Sailor Oyster Bar. SOB originally opened in 2016, but a devastating fire in June 2022 forced it to close for 19 months. Lucky for us, they reopened in March 2024 and are still doing what they do best: a huge variety of fresh oysters, unique cocktails, and other edgy kitchen-less creations.

We ordered Seastones from VA and Goose Points from WA for the sake of comparing different regions. The Goose Points were a different animal compared to the mostly-local oysters we’ve been slurpin’ all week.

The oyster menu included 9 varieties when we went. Happy hour runs Tuesday through Friday, 4–5:30 PM, all day on Sunday, and includes $1.50 select oysters and $5 drafts and bubs (AKA bubbles AKA sparkly drinks). You can also get oysters with The Waltz – a decadent platter with bubbles – or in oyster chowder.

We are so glad they didn’t give up the ship. ♥️

Annapolis prepares for impacts of Debby

Tropical depression Debby (previously Tropical Storm Debby, previously Hurricane Debby) is making her way up the East Coast. So the City of Annapolis is urging residents to be ready for heavy rain and wind today. 🌧

Annapolis will be on what meteorologists call the “dirty side” of the storm, meaning storm surge, wind, and heavy rain can push more water onto land. High tide today (8/9) is 8:50 AM and 9:53 PM. Residents can reach the Annapolis Call Center’s non-emergency line for information at 410-260-2211.

Energy plan for Navy Dairy Farm gets pushback ☀️

On Tuesday night, many community members voiced opposition to the Navy’s plan to develop a renewable energy generation project at the former Naval Academy Dairy Farm in Gambrills. According to The Capital’s report, concerns about the project’s suitability on prime agricultural land, an 857-acre property, were raised. To meet federal carbon-free electricity goals, the Navy, with county support, is seeking proposals by September 12 to determine what renewable energy generation like solar panels could look like on the farm.

In addition to solar panels, the Navy is open to the integration of agrivoltaics — pairing solar with agriculture to create energy and space for crops, grazing, and native habitats under and between panels — with local crop cultivation, farming ventures, and use by local orgs.

How to win Wendy’s for life 🍔 🥤

Is this real? Yes, for real, someone in Annapolis is going to win free Wendy’s for life tomorrow (8/10) from the 1949 West Street location.

Apparently, as part of a promotion to let folks know about major remodeling happening at some locations, a voucher will randomly be given out to one of the first 100 customers (16-years-old and up). The lucky winner will get a sandwich, salad or breakfast biscuit for free, once a week . . . for life!

How can you get in on the action? Show up for the 10:30 AM opening (but we’re guessing a line will form well before) and be one of the first 100 to make a purchase to try your chance for the golden ticket! 🍔 May the Frosty odds be ever in your favor! 🥤

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Today’s the last day to get tickets for Naptown Scoop’s Fourth Anniversary Party

This is not a drill. Today is the last day we can sell tickets to our Fourth Anniversary Party (which is next Friday) because we have to tell the caterers how many people we’re expecting. So, can we expect you? We’ve got dinner, dessert, an open bar, and a big announcement to make. It’s Friday, August 16 from 6:30–9:30 PM at the Annapolis Maritime Museum in Eastport. Get your tickets now or forever regret missing out. JK, there’s lots of great reasons to miss but we hope to see you there :)

For the Love of the Library 📚

If you’ve ever visited the library to borrow a book, a movie, (or fishing pole!), maybe use the internet, print something, or snag a meeting space, you know what a valuable resource it is! And unfortunately, public funding doesn’t cover all the library needs to offer all these cool programs and resources.

That’s why Anne Arundel County Public Library is inviting the public to come out and celebrate the library while raising some greatly needed funds at its annual For the Love of the Library, on September 27, 6–8 PM, at the Busch Annapolis Library. Tickets are on sale now. Early bird tickets are available now until 9/4.

Nothing in this section is sponsored. They're just the things you need to know. I'll always let you know when something's sponsored.
