🍦How to watch the Blue Angels from the water

County budget, Navy's playing Towson for the first time in a while, the week ahead...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. If you want to see some very average men’s league hockey tonight, head to McMullen Hockey Arena at 7:15 PM and root for the Motorboaters (sponsored by Driven and Naptown Scoop partner Lawn Doctor). We’re chasing the championship for the third year in a row, which would forever cement us into Annapolis men’s league history.

Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST

What’s the best place to watch the Blue Angels? ✈️ â›ľď¸đŸš˘

On the water, of course. Usually, you need to plan far in advance for Blue Angels viewing. But a few nautical opportunities remain for procrastinators. For starters, the Annapolis Maritime Museum’s historic skipjack Wilma Lee has seats for both the Flight Rehearsal (May 21, 11:30 AM–3:30 PM) and the Flight Demonstration (May 22, 11:30 AM–3:30 PM). Tickets Include a fresh boxed lunch from a local restaurant plus 2 drinks. Also, Darling Charters still has a private cruise available for practice day (5/21) on their gorgeous little picnic boat.

P.S. Can’t commit to watching from the water? We’ll have recommendations for you soon.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

The Week Ahead

💐 Let’s start with May Day. This Wednesday, downtown residents and businesses will display gorgeous flower baskets on their front doors or steps. The best baskets – as chosen by the Garden Club of Old Annapolis Towne – earn their creators a ticket to the coveted Winners Tea. Here’s a map of the areas that usually participate.

🩸 Then we’ll get a little preachy. Not too much I promise. Luminis Health AAMC’s blood bank is running really low. If you can, please consider donating blood at Historic Annapolis’ blood drive this Thursday from 10 AM – 4 PM at the William Paca House. Blood donors get a complimentary garden pass. We’re also hosting a blood drive with AAMC on May 17.

☘️ Now for the weekend. Let’s start with the Annapolis Irish Festival on Saturday from 11 AM to 9 PM. Celebrate the culture of the Emerald Isle with food, music, and plenty of family-friendly activities at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds.

🪅 Then it’s time for the Maryland Fiesta Latina on Sunday from 11 AM to 7 PM. This celebration of Latino heritage and culture coincides with Cinco de Mayo and includes music, cultural demonstrations, and ethnic food at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds.

⛺️ Maybe you’ve heard of Camp Letts — Newsweek recently named it one of the best summer camps in the country. Learn more about their day and overnight camps at an open house this Saturday from noon to 2 PM. Guests will see the facilities and learn about camp activities.

Musical Monday

There’s one big performance coming up this week, but not even its producers know how it ends: Annapolis Opera’s 36th Annual Vocal Competition Hear the most talented rising stars in the classical vocal world sing for the title in this prestigious competition on Sunday at 3 PM at Maryland Hall — 801 Chase Street, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Towson University football just put two easy commutes on its schedule — a game against Navy on September 5, 2026 and another on August 31, 2030. Both contests will be the season opener for each team and both will be played in Annapolis. Navy and Towson have met just once before in the 2008 season opener. Slotback Shun White “ran wild” as the hosting Mids beat the Tigers, 41-13. Shun rushed for 348 yards, still a single-game Navy record. In 2023 under first-year coaches, Towson posted a 5–6 record with Pete Shinnick, while Navy notched a 5–7 mark with coach Brian Newberry.
