THE DIGEST

AP Scores Increase 🌟

AACPS earns high marks again! For the third consecutive year, AACPS’ average AP score, number of students taking exams, and the percentage of students scoring 3 or higher all improved. Over 64% of students scored 3 or higher (a 2-point increase from 2022–23 and an 11-point rise since 2020–21), which most U.S. colleges and universities accept for credit.

Other key stats:

  • Average AP score: 3.03, up from 2.92 last year and 2.68 in 2020–21

  • 12,285 exams administered. 2,000 more than last year

Dr. Bedell noted that while an increase in exams often correlates with a score drop, this highlights the district's continued growth. ✍️

Shell yeah! 10 million oysters 🦪

“No filter” may sound good when posting pics online, but not when it comes to the environment. In fact, having an effective filter for local waterways is a big goal of the Severn River Association. In this case: oysters.

These shellfish filter harmful pollutants out of the water; up to 50 gallons every single day, according to NOAA! Which is why SRA teamed up with Oyster Recovery Partnership to plant 10 million new oysters on a sanctuary reef in the Severn this week. This is the latest in a longstanding collaboration between the two organizations, which have planted more than 174 million oysters in the river through Operation Build-a-Reef since 2018.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Wandering Words: Maryland’s new mobile bookstore 📚

To our fellow book lovers, dreams do come true. Wandering Words, a mobile bookstore, hit the road on August 5, thanks to the hard work of Arnold resident and business owner Kali O’Leary, her husband, and their four kids. Together, they transformed the inside of a trailer to become a tiny bookstore, doing everything from navigating hardware stores to staining wood and, of course, picking books.

Kali, a former first grade teacher, said, “I am hoping to work like a food truck where neighborhoods and events invite me.” Kali will post her calendar weekly on her Instagram (@wanderingwordsmd) to share where she’ll wander.

She’s also planning book signings with local authors and will announce dates soon. You can bet Scoop writers and authors Dylan and Lauren will volunteer in that department and stick around to hang in the magical, mobile bookstore! Email Kali at [email protected] to request a visit. ✨
