Good morning, Annapolis. What’s green and has wheels? Grass. I lied about the wheels.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Movie night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium

  • Johns Hopkins’ childhood home

  • New art exhibit

Let’s get to it.

Who’s in charge of the Butterfly Brigade 🦋

By now, many of you have the 14th annual Annapolis Run for the Light House on your radar. Psst: we’re a sponsor and encourage you to do the 1.25-mile walk, 5K, or half marathon taking place on September 17 at Quiet Waters Park.

All proceeds from this race benefit The Annapolis Light House, a homeless prevention support center.

Furkinsense & Purr Owner and “Professional Pet Delighter” Rachel Goad is going a step further. The Butterfly Brigade is her fundraiser for Friends of The Light House, a charity specifically founded for funding the Annapolis Light House. In the last 11 years, Friends of the Light House has donated more than $1.9 million to the Light House.

Rachel was inspired to get involved when she gave jogging a try during one of her regular dog walks. Previously, 30 seconds was the longest she could run. Now, Rachel’s worked her way up to 9.5 miles and plans to participate in the half marathon.

Butterflies represent metamorphosis. So, as a metaphor, they apply to the two main aspects of Rachel’s fundraiser:

  • Breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty

  • Rachel’s own self-transformation of losing weight and living actively

To symbolize this metaphor further, Rachel’s wearing butterfly wings on race day. She’ll also tie a ribbon for each donor to have a streamer of supporters running with her.

Support a great cause and become a member of Rachel’s 🦋 Brigade by making a tax-deductible donation. Lastly, honk if you see a wings-wearing lady training around town!

Auction for Johns Hopkins’ childhood home postponed due to legal battle

You’ve probably seen his name on a thing or two . . . like you know, a world-renowned university and hospital. And you were going to be able to put your name on something that was his, the 1700s house he grew up at in Gambrills. But the auction was canceled.

Here’s the TL;DR (too long, didn’t read). A nonprofit bought the house last March using a loan from the former owners. They didn’t pay back the loan, it went to foreclosure court, and the former owners scheduled it for auction. They both agreed Monday to postpone the auction to see if they can work it out like Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez (without the taking 17 years part). ($)

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my

Ever wondered how much the Westin’s worth?

So did the former Naval Academy midshipman who now leads a hospitality investment firm in Bethesda. Fred W. Malek (a 1988 USNA graduate) purchased the 225-room hotel at 100 Westgate Circle for drumroll please. . . $51 million. The firm is planning upgrades to the restaurant and bar soon. HEI Hotels & Resorts will continue to manage the property.

Fun fact: In 2007, the Academy named its practice field at the Brigade Sports Complex after Malek, who played rugby as a Mid. ($)

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Free movie night at Navy Stadium

Tonight, you don’t have to be a linebacker to play on the field. On Wednesday (8/16), Luminis Health is streaming Super Movie Brothers: The Movie on the big screen at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Bring blankets or lawn chairs to sit on the field or grab a stadium seat. Gates open at 6 PM. Free but registration is encouraged. Parking at Gate 5 is $10 and the concession stand will be open.

Tides and Tunes Summer Finale

This is it: the final Tides and Tunes of the summer. Mike McHenry Tribe plays at the Annapolis Maritime Museum’s concert series on Thursday (8/17). Bring your own reusable cup (it’s a zero-waste event) and drink up because summer’s ending AND beverage sales support the museum’s education programs. 7–9 PM (8/17). 723 Second St, Annapolis, MD 21403

Btw, Summer (and Tides and Tunes) may end 👎, but the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park loves music so the concerts continue into September 👍. Head to their new 2,600 sq. foot Merrill Family Pavilion starting September 7 for more concerts! See the lineup.

Coming up: 60th anniversary of the March on Washington

On August 28, 1963, 250k people took to D.C. for the March on Washington. 500 came from Annapolis. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered a very famous speech (you know the one!) in which he dreamed of racial equality. To celebrate 60 years since that day, Annapolis is hosting a good old-fashioned reenactment next Sunday (8/26). It departs Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and ends at City Dock, where a short ceremony will follow. Annapolitan George Trotter, who marched in 1963, will be in attendance.

Save this date: Annual library gala

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: having fun isn’t hard when you’ve got a library card. AACPL just announced the date of its annual gala and celebrating the awesomeness of the library is what it’s all about. The gala is September 22 at the Michael E. Busch location on West Street.
