THE DIGEST
The Fur-ocious Battle Continues: Mutt Madness Round 2 🐶
There’s something we mutt tell you about. Starting this morning (aka now), Mutt Madness Round 2 is officially underway. We appreciate everyone entering and voting. And, a round of a-paws to the pups moving on! Looking ahead, Round 3 kicks off Friday. Wondering how many rounds are left in this tail-wagging tournament? There are 6 voting rounds. Each time, half the contestants will be eliminated.
🗳️ Vote now.
P.S. We handled Archie-gate (we accidentally included him in two matchups) by forfeiting one of his matches. He was winning both, so we forfeited him in the closer matchup. Congratulations, Winnie. You lived to fight another round.
Five local students competing to be the most powerful high school student in America
Anne Arundel’s Board of Education comprises 8 people. 7 of them remember dial-up Internet; one’s never lived in a world without WiFi. That’s because one is a student. In fact, they’re the only student member of a local board of education in the whole country with full voting rights. Hence the title of this story. These 5 students were just nominated to be next year’s student member – AKA SMOB.
Adagio Baldwin, Old Mill High School
Alex Cuff, Glen Burnie High School
Michelle Fadele, Chesapeake High School
Brayden Morgan, Glen Burnie High School
Jack Warrick, Chesapeake Science Point
Final interviews will be done March 7, at which point the field will be whittled to three. Those three will debate it out on April 9. Then the local association of student councils will vote for their favorite who will be appointed by Governor Wes Moore.

Dog of the Week: Meet Zoey
We have to hand it to Zoey — that one-ear-up-one-ear-down look is working for her. Apparently, she’s always got one ear flopping down, and who could deny how adorable it is? Zoey’s a 5-year-old German Shepherd mix who has been at the SPCA since September 2022, which seems a shamefully long time for her to be there for such a sweet, gentle, loving girl. She’s full of energy and excitement, so it’s best she goes to a home without any other animals or dogs. If you think you can give her a fur-ever home, stop by to visit her in Wing 3 at 1815 Bay Ridge Avenue, Annapolis.

Annapolis Breaks Ground on Skate Park
We’re dying to make an Avril Lavigne reference, but that would date us. However, in good news for local skaters, the City has broken ground on much-anticipated improvements to the Truxtun Park Skate Park. The redesign was influenced by skaters, and the overall budget is being assisted by a $50,000 GoFundMe initiated by the Barish family in memory of local skater Tameron Barish. The project is expected to take six months to complete.
P.S. Pardon the typo in these renderings. It’s straight from Rec and Parks social media.

LOCAL BUSINESS
Secret Spot Pizza Is Coming to Market House
You’ve likely seen the Secret Spot pizza truck serving slices for hungry foodies. Despite the name, they’re not great at hiding. And the great news is that you don’t have to wait for their next popup because they’re getting even worse at keeping secrets permanently establishing themselves in Market House! Head down for their grand opening on Friday, March 7, beginning at 11 AM for pizza, beer, and live music. We recommend the Vodka Parm.
Is WRNR Coming Back?
For everyone who argues that WTMD just isn’t the same as WRNR, your wishes may be answered: Cortona Media, who owns WRNR, have secured the lease for a radio tower and production studio and are considering bringing WRNR back to airwaves. The City Council would be Cortona’s landlord, setting out terms for the lease in last month’s Council Meeting. WRNR was on the radio for almost 25 years, leaving the air for online streaming in February 2023. Our commute hasn’t been the same since. ($)

Spring is in the air 🍀
You know that neighbor who had the perfect green lawn last summer? They started preparing for that in spring, likely with Lawn Doctor. Let me explain.
Winter is rough on grass. Cold makes it go dormant, kind of like a hibernating bear. Lawn Doctor’s spring care programs use tried and true methods like essential fertilization to control spring weeds and bare patches to rejuvenate your grass and protect it from future damage.
And their expertise doesn’t stop there. They’ll even give you mowing techniques so your grass will be the envy of the neighborhood all summer long. Get your free quote today!
WHAT’S HAPPENIN’
St. Patrick’s Weekend in Annapolis ☘️
Feeling lucky, punk? Might be a classic 70s movie. Might be some leprechaun magic sneaking into the city ahead of the St. Patrick’s festivities this weekend. This much-anticipated weekend begins Saturday with the 10th annual Hooley at the Naval Academy Alumni Association’s Fluegel Hall. This sold out pre-party goes 5–10 PM with a lineup of Irish music plus food and an open bar.
The main festivities are Sunday with the St. Patrick’s Parade going through downtown starting at 1 PM. The parade begins at the Amos Garrett Garage and goes down West Street, Church Circle, Main Street to City Dock over 2-1/2 hours of pure Irish pride. The day continues with Shamrock the Dock music festival starting at 2:30 PM at City Dock. But your luck’s shorter than Tom Cruise if you haven’t bought tickets — that’s sold out, too. Can’t say we didn’t warn ya.
The Ballad of Wallis Island to open AFF 🎥🍿
Sundance is the biggest indie film festival in the US, though it isn’t always convenient to get out to Utah every summer to attend — but why bother when you’ve got a great film fest right here? This year, the Annapolis Film Festival is set to commence with a Sundance favorite, The Ballad of Wallis Island, as its Opening Night Film so you really don’t need to go to Utah. The movie from Focus Features follows a musician who books a gig playing for an eccentric millionaire and is reunited with an estranged bandmate. It’ll have a limited theatrical release starting March 28, but Annapolitans can see it early at the festival on March 27 at 7 PM at Maryland Hall. AFF continues the rest of the weekend through March 30 with features, shorts, narrative films, and documentaries. Tickets go on sale this week.
Tickets now available: Bands in the Sand 🎤 🌊 🎸
Name something better than live music beachside. We’ll wait. That’s why Bands in the Sand is one of Scoop’s favorite fundraisers. Each summer, 1,600 guests gather on the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s beach to dance the night away and raise a drink to saving the Bay. This year’s party is on Saturday, June 14, 5:30–10 PM at the Philip Merrill Environmental Center in Annapolis. As always, tickets include unlimited food and drinks. Tickets go on sale at 9 AM today. General Admission early bird pricing ends April 30 — or earlier if tickets sell out. Don’t delay. Grab tickets now!
