🍦What we're stoked about in August

Foodie Friday: Boat Picnic Edition, New nonprofit center, Anne Arundel upgrading planning and zoning software...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. We’d like to apologize to Harry Potter for missing his birthday yesterday. Although when your glory days were over before you turned 18, you probably don’t mind people forgetting your 44th birthday.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Foodie Friday: Boat Picnic Edition

  • New nonprofit center

  • Anne Arundel upgrading planning and zoning software

Let’s get to it.

Tickets Are Live for ASO’s 2025 Season

The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra’s 2025 season is officially open for single-ticket sales.

And trust us, you don’t want to wait. Holiday Pops at Maryland Hall sells out every year — and this year, it’s joined by performances in Severna Park and a brand-new venue at Bowie State. That means more music, more seats, and more ways to experience the magic of ASO.

The season blends festive favorites, timeless classics, and powerful performances that stay with you long after the final note. Whether you're returning to a beloved tradition or discovering ASO for the first time, it’s a season worth planning for.

But the best seats go quickly, especially for Holiday Pops.

🎉 Ribbon Cutting for new Nonprofit Hub

Heads up, Crownsville. A new chapter at the Crownsville Hospital Memorial Park begins Monday with the grand opening of the Nonprofit Center. This facility will support local nonprofits with training, shared workspaces, and in-person and virtual resources making it easier (and cheaper) for them to serve our community.

Expect remarks from County Executive Steuart Pittman and the first resident organizations. You can also tour the newly renovated space. Rain or shine, all are welcome. Monday, August 4 at 10:30 AM. 41 Community Place, Crownsville, MD 21032.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Foodie Friday: Boat Picnics ⛵️🧺🛥️

With spreads like these from Annapolis spots, you’ll be yelling “I’m on a boat!” All. The. Time. Translation? You’ll get invited again and again.

The Big Cheese | 47 Randall St | Sandwiches galore — breakfast, cold, or hot — their menu is extensive but not expensive. We frequently pretend Ego Alley is a pristine Italian harbor while eating Mozzarella & Prosciutto on a baguette. They’re also a one-stop-shop for cheese, wine, beer, and catering.

Graul’s Market | 607 Taylor Ave | Head to the deli and ask for Chicken Salad. Then grab some potato rolls. Want to impress your boatmates? Put a green apple and brie slice on each sandwich.

Capriotti’s | 2285 Forest Dr | The Classic Italian hits the spot on a hot day. Order an assortment of large subs for a group and share. We also love The Bobbie (cold this time of year) and Classic Club.

Trader Joe’s | 160 F, Jennifer Rd, Ste F | Hit the meats and cheese aisle and pick up hard cheeses like Gouda or Cheddar, soft cheeses like Brie or Burrata, and meats like Prosciutto or Salami for max flavor and textures. Don’t forget the crackers, nuts, grapes, jam, and chocolate to craft a charcuterie board with an 86% chance of getting you invited back on your neighbor’s new boat.*

*Percentages are not guaranteed. Do not call us if your neighbor doesn’t invite you back on their brand new Chris-Craft.

Things we’re looking forward to in August 📆

Wasn’t it just Memorial Day? Didn’t school let out last week? Somehow it’s already August. There’s a lot to look forward to this month. Here’s what we’re most excited about:

🏰 Maryland Renaissance Festival Opening August 23. Travel back in time to the 16th century at what is widely regarded as one of the best renaissance fairs in the entire US. And it’s right here in our backyard. Single-day tickets go on sale Monday and will go quickly — multi-day passes sold out in a few hours.

👟 50th Annual Annapolis 10-Mile Run August 24. Registration is still open for this opportunity to sweat your way through a surprisingly hilly 10 miles. (This is one of Scoop writer Dylan’s favorite local races!)

🎡 Maryland State Fair Opening August 21. This might not be in Annapolis, but the carnival, competitions, and concerts are definitely worth the drive to Timonium.

🌽 A Taste of Arundel Grown August 6. Savor the flavor of the best that local farmers and watermen have to offer at this agricultural showcase.

🚗 Carriages on West street August 10. This all-Corvette car show along West Street combines auto enthusiasm with Annapolitan history.

🏈 Navy Home Opener (vs. VMI) August 30. The month closes out with Navy’s first home game against VMI. Don’t miss the start of what we’re hoping is an exciting season after last year’s successful campaign.

CIVIL NEWS

Cutting some red tape ✂️

Starting this Monday, Anne Arundel County is launching Phase 2 of Land Use Navigator (a cloud-based system for land development and zoning processes). That means you’ll be able to:

✅ Submit applications online
✅ Get real-time project updates
✅ Pay fees digitally (i.e. no more checks)

County Exec Steuart Pittman says this will reduce paper processing by 90%. Reading between the lines, this hopefully means things will go faster. Already using the permitting side of Land Use Navigator? Come Monday, everything will be in the same place.

THANKS!

Good morning, Annapolis. Oh wait, this isn’t the intro. Shoot. Uh. . . thanks for reading Naptown Scoop today. If you found something useful, just be nice to someone today. If being nice happens to include sharing a super informative email about Annapolis, that’s just fine with us. But at least be nice 🙂
