THE DIGEST

USNA Brigade March Saturday 🚙

Saturday is going to be a big day in the City of Annapolis: It’s the start of Navy football’s 2024 season, and as such, there will also be the Brigade of Midshipmen march from Gate 1 at USNA to Navy Stadium. So, what does this mean if you need to drive around town on Saturday morning?

The Brigade march goes from approx. 10:50 AM to 11:40 AM. It marches along Main Street to Church Circle, then along College Avenue to Bladen Street to Rowe Boulevard to Herbert Sachs Drive. It concludes by crossing Taylor Avenue to the stadium. Go Navy! ⚓

Historic home for sale 🏠

Here’s your chance to live in a part of history: The childhood home of William Sand — who enlisted at age 19 to fight in the Revolutionary War and likely died in summer 1776 in the Battle of Long Island — is up for sale. The home on Prince George’s Street, built in 1700, is the oldest frame building in Annapolis. It was recently restored by current owners Kevin and Laura Smith, who took care to balance the contemporary elements with love for the home’s historic character. It’s currently on the market for $1.7 million. ($)

Nature enthusiasts, join the BioBlitz! 🐝

Are you really good at identifying particular types of insects or mushrooms? If that’s the case, then here’s a challenge for you. The City of Annapolis has launched what’s known as a BioBlitz. Anyone who’s interested can download the iNaturalist app and upload photos they’ve taken of local wildlife to the “Parks for Pollinators Annapolis 2024” project — plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms are all eligible. Whoever uploads the most pics wins a week’s membership to the Pip Moyer Rec Center. Get details.

AACPS test scores improve for 2nd year 🏫

Anne Arundel County schools’ proficiency rates on state English and math assessments rose for the second consecutive year, according to data released Tuesday by the Maryland State DOE. English scores increased by 2% and math by 1.8% on the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program standardized test.

“I want to be very clear that we have a lot of work to do to improve these scores,” said Mark Bedell, Superintendent of AACPS. See highlighted stats below or take a deep data dive.

  • AA County reported increases in 13 of 14 tested areas, with 3rd grade English being the only category to drop.

    • The statewide percentage of test takers scoring proficient each rose by less than a percentage point.

  • In AA County, 53.9% of students scored proficient in English, and 27.6% in math.

    • Across Maryland, about 48.4% of students scored proficient in English, and 24.1% in math. ($)

Riethman named to Reese’s Senior Bowl Watch List 🏈

Call it a pretty sweet honor for this Navy player: Riley Riethman, a senior punter, recently was named to the Reese’s Senior Bowl Watch List (and yes, it’s named that because it’s sponsored by the candy Reese’s). Most people know this all-star football game as the first stage in the NFL Draft process, which sounds promising for Riethman, who enters this season as Navy’s career leader in punting with an average punt of 44 yards.
