Good morning, Annapolis. Anyone else feel that slight chill in the air last night? Fall is coming and we are. Here. For. It. Summer’s great and all but I’m over sweating through three shirts a day.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Drive-in movie night

  • 911 update 📲

  • Energy Assistance grants

Let’s get to it.

Nonprofit of the Week: Annapolis Dragon Boat Club

This feature is officially back! Every week we’re going to highlight an awesome nonprofit doing great work around Annapolis. The queue is full so we aren’t accepting new requests until we knock a few off the list.

The Annapolis Dragon Boat Club promotes healthy bodies and supports cancer patients (especially breast cancer) by paddling dragon boats (which are basically 48-foot canoes) up and down Spa Creek and in races around the area.

Annapolitan – and breast cancer survivor – Mike Ashford started the club in 2010 with a handful of friends. Now it has over 100 members that drive from near and far to paddle with the club. When I paddled with the club a couple weeks ago, our friends at the Bosom Buddies Foundation joined the dragon boaters to celebrate their new partnership.

Paddling a dragon boat makes anyone healthier because it’s a great workout. But it’s especially helpful for breast cancer survivors. According to the research of Dr. Dan McKenzie, dragon boat paddling plays a major role in reducing lymphedema and building much-needed strength.

Anyone is welcome to join the club. Click here to learn more.

.

Brad Kappel is excited to present The Friary – the most exquisite estate in Annapolis on or off the market.

The Friary is set on 23 secluded acres high above the Severn River yet it’s just a few minutes away from downtown Annapolis by boat or car. Getting to Washington D.C. is equally easy. Route 50 is moments away.

The stately 35,000 square foot home, formerly a Capuchin monastery, contains 7 bedrooms, 8 full bathrooms, and a chapel turned ballroom. Other extraordinary features include 11 fireplaces, an indoor and outdoor pool, and a six slip 10’ MLW private marina – conveniently accessible via funicular.

THE DIGEST

📞 911, I’d like to report a dropped 911 call

If 911 doesn’t pick up, what do you do? You can call Ghostbusters – or you can hang up and wait. The county police department suggested the latter this week, announcing that some incoming 911 calls have dropped due to technical issues. The department says not all calls are affected, but someone will return your call immediately should you not be connected at first.

No one needs to live in the dark

Know a neighbor who could use help keeping their heat and electricity on? The Community Action Agency of Anne Arundel County is accepting applications for its new Energy Assistance program year. The program supports income-eligible county residents in meeting their utility bills. Apply online or in person at the Annapolis or Linthicum Heights locations.

A Modern Take on School

Curiosity may kill cats, but it’s innovation rocket fuel in humans. Unfortunately, our school system crushes curiosity year by year until kids hate learning because learning = school and school = boring. As Einstein said, “It’s a miracle that curiosity survives formal education.” Acton Academy Annapolis’ unique approach stimulates curiosity through collaborative work, mixed-age classes, tons of outdoor activities, and much more.
