Good morning, Annapolis. Happy First of May! This newsletter is dedicated to Elle and Dan Shanahan. They know why.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • World’s Largest Diaper Drive

  • Anne Arundel’s new SMOB

Let’s get to it.

Annapolis Maritime Museum steps up big time for Annapolis Hope

The coolest thing about Annapolis Hope is seeing our community step up. Businesses have made unsolicited grants (thanks, SpinSheet đŸ¤—). Local businesses have donated portions of sales (Always Ice Cream, Annapolis Candle, Wrabyn, & J. McLaughlin). And now we’re incredibly thankful for the kind folks at the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park.

They’re letting us borrow their iconic skipjack, Wilma Lee, on the 1-year anniversary of the tragic triple murder that made Annapolis Hope necessary. The crew is donating their time. Roxana Rodriguez from Caliente Grill is donating food and drinks. And our goal is to raise $20,000 in one beautiful sunset cruise.

Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park President & CEO Alice Estrada said, “We are thrilled to be able to support the Mireles family through their grief journey and assist in the acquisition of a home to bring them comfort by offering a magical sail aboard our historic skipjack Wilma Lee.”

If you want to help us hit our goal, please visit our Eventbrite page.

Coastal Perfection on the South River

We’ve all heard it. . . location, location, location. Well, this is it.

Not only is this home gorgeous (more on that below), but it’s perfectly situated. By car, you’re on the highways or in downtown Annapolis in mere minutes. By boat, it’s just a quick idle under the Route 2 bridge and you’re on your way. Now back to the home.

It’s a recently custom-built coastal home on a private gated paradise spanning 8,600 square feet across three floors. The smart design is incredibly spacious and perfect for family gatherings. One of the 7 bedrooms even has 6 beds and a play area!

And of course it has all the luxury touches you’d expect – hickory floors, deluxe chef’s kitchen, luxurious primary suite, elaborate millwork, and extra-high ceilings.

Outside, there’s a cozy screened porch, heated saltwater pool, and private pier with a lift and multiple slips.

It’s the perfect home base for the Annapolitan lifestyle. Contact Brad Kappel for a private tour today.

THE DIGEST

What’s a “shellout?”

You’ve probably never heard the word “shellout.” That’s because the Annapolis Blues invented it. Last year, the Blues and we (their loyal fans) broke the league attendance record not once, but twice! We now hold the #1 and #2 spots with 8,368 and 7,665 respectively. But that’s not good enough.

This season, we’re teaming up with the Blues to smash those records. We want 10,000 people at the home opener and 5,000 season seat holders. So who’s with us? The season officially opens June 1 and we’re a few season seats short. You can grab season seats here. Can’t make every game? Snag individual tickets.

And remember, it’s not olè, it’s Old Bay 🦀

Meet your new SMOB: Hafsa Hamdaoui

AACPS has elected its newest Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB). Hafsa Hamdaoui, a junior at Crofton High School. Her name now goes before Governor Wes Moore for the official appointment. Hamdaoui will be the first SMOB from Crofton HS and plans to focus on equity and mental health.

Interesting tidbit: Anne Arundel County’s SMOB is the only one in the nation with full voting rights, a privilege granted in 1975.

New logo and parade route for Annapolis Pride 🏳️‍🌈

The fourth annual Annapolis Pride Parade and Festival is June 1. This year, the parade follows a new route, starting at City Dock and moving along Main Street to West Street and ending at the intersection of Amos Garrett Boulevard.

A festival will follow on the field behind Maryland Hall. Big (yet still local) names slated for this year are grand marshal Christian Siriano (of Project Runway fame) and festival headliner L. Rodger (from The Voice). And if all that wasn’t enough, Annapolis Pride made a new logo too. More info here.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Correction: Market at South River Colony

We published some incorrect info about the Market at South River Colony last week. Sorry about that. Here’s the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

The Reliable Group, a local real estate firm, bought 118,000 square feet of the Market at South River Colony in Edgewater last week. George Shenas and Collin Mercier are leasing that, which includes everything but the former K-Mart. The Keith Corporation, a North Carolina real estate firm, bought the former K-Mart space (another 118,000 square feet) in January. Tractor Supply Company is taking 33,000 square feet. Jeff Bach and Joe Botzler from Jones Lang LaSalle are leasing the rest.

Summer is almost here ☀️

… just 50 more nights and it’s officially back. When you’re preparing for the season, don’t forget about your dog! Are their vaccines up-to-date for boarding while you’re on vacation? Are they a healthy weight? Obesity in pets can cause serious (and expensive) problems.

Problems are better (and cheaper) prevented rather than solved. But veterinarians tend to get slammed during summer. So now’s the perfect time to make sure you have one you trust. Lucky for you, Western Shore Veterinary Hospital is welcoming new clients and we know you’ll love their team.

Week-long sessions start June 23. Your teens will truly think like Johnnies thanks to the discussion-based, interdisciplinary method of teaching great books. Apply today.

World's Largest Diaper Drive for Maryland 👶🏻

This stat blew my mind. Before being potty trained, babies use about 7,000 diapers. Sadly, 1 in 2 families struggle to provide diapers for their kids. So for the second year, Annapolis-based Walk the Walk Foundation has joined diaper banks across the USA to collect 2 million diapers for families in need this May.
