THE DIGEST

Potential plans for a new Bay Bridge 🚙

Raise your hand if you’ve ever read the Scoop sitting in Bay Bridge Traffic 🤚. The MDTA has been evaluating the Bridge for years now and they’ve got a few ideas to discuss. While they considered many options (no new bridge, a double decker bridge, and even ferries), they’ve outlined 6 plans to build 2 entirely new spans in the same area as the originals.

All 6 are somewhere between 8–10 lanes wide. Right now, the Eastbound span is 2 wide and Westbound is 3.

New Bay Bridge spans would be one of Maryland’s most ambitious infrastructure projects ever. For context, the Key Bridge was 1.6 miles long. The Bay Bridge is 4.3 miles. But replacement may be necessary; the Bay Bridge is getting a little gray hair. What we now call the Eastbound span opened as the only span in 1952 and the Westbound span opened in 1973. MD Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld has said they may be near the end of their “useful lifespan.”

  • The bridges also may not be able to keep up with a changing shipping industry. Right now, they have 186 feet of clearance over the Bay. Baltimore’s new Key Bridge will have 230 feet of clearance compared to the old 185’

Got thoughts or just want to learn more? MDTA is holding 3 public meetings (1 virtual meeting and 2 in-person) next month to get feedback:

December 4
6–8 PM
Virtual: baycrossingstudy.com

December 9
6–8 PM
Broadneck High School (1265 Green Holly Drive, Annapolis)

December 11
6–8 PM
Kent Island High School (900 Love Point Road, Stevensville)

You can also respond via this survey. MDTA expects to choose a plan by November 2026 before getting design and construction bids. The new spans will likely be finished in the 2030s.
