USNA Commandant change, All-Star Classic, Chicken Wing Festival...
Good morning, Annapolis. In the immortal words of Prince, it’s just another manic Monday.
In today’s Naptown Scoop:
All-Star Classic
Chicken Wing Festival
Navy’s 2024 football schedule
Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST
USNA Commandant Change
Colonel James “J.P.” McDonough III is leaving the Naval Academy this summer after a successful three-year assignment. His replacement? Captain Walter H. Allman III. After graduating from the Naval Academy in 1997, Captain Allman set out on a 20+ year special forces career. His resume includes time spent on SEAL teams 1 and 3 and several combat deployments.
If you’re wondering why the men have different ranks, it’s because McDonough is a Marine officer while Allman is a Navy officer. Each holds his branch’s respective O-6 pay grade rank.
And for the unfamiliar, the Commandant at USNA is like the dean of students at a civilian university.
Cummings murder trial appeal begins
In June 2021, Michelle Cummings was killed by a stray bullet while dropping her son Trey off at the Naval Academy for his first year. Angelo Harrod was arrested for the killing less than a day later. He was given three life sentences – one for Michelle and two for his intended targets – in December 2022. But Harrod is appealing his case based on how evidence was presented to the jury. Oral arguments began Friday. There’s no timeline for when the appeal will end. ($)

LOCAL BUSINESS
What is the Women in Business Passport?
Remember The Great Annapolis Pumpkin Spice Coffee Crawl? Well the Women in Business Passport is just like that. Except instead of trying autumnal sugary drinks all over town, you support women-owned businesses. It’s hosted by Fount + Flourish, a community of women in business created by Annapolis local Bailey Feldman.
So for the entire month of March – which not coincidentally is Women’s History Month – you can get a stamp on your passport which you’ll pick up at The Fount or any participating business. Once you have 10 stamps, let Bailey know. The first 20 get a “Support your local girl gang” shirt and all subsequent finishers get a keychain. Click here to get in on this!

The Anne Arundel County Senior All-Star Classic is a 33-year tradition. It’s when Anne Arundel’s best basketball players – from public and private schools – face off in a doubleheader (boys and girls) that benefits our local Boys and Girls Club. 52 players made the rosters. If you want to watch, mark your calendar for 5:30 PM on March 20. The games will be played at Severna Park High School with the girls tipoff at 5:30 PM and the boys at 7:30 PM. Beloved local sports journalist Bill Wagner and Broadneck basketball coach Jeff Starr co-direct this event. ($)
The American Athletic Conference revealed Navy’s 2024 schedule last week. It includes 12 games – 5 at home, 5 on the road, and 2 at neutral sites. The Mids begin with 3 home games in a row starting with Bucknell on August 31. They close the season as always with Army on December 14 at MetLife stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. October 26’s Notre Dame game is a heck of a lot closer to home than last season. It will be played at FedEx Field. Season tickets are on sale now. Single game tickets will be available soon.
As one might expect, the Naval Academy is good at swimming & diving. Very good, in fact. Last weekend, both the men’s and women’s teams won their respective ECAC championships. The women’s team won its second consecutive championship. The men’s team won an incredible tenth consecutive championship. Congratulations to both teams!
