šŸ¦When's the Herndon Climb this year?

Public school lax playoffs, Rotary Crab Feast, new interactive Black history map...

Good morning, Annapolis. A Daily Mail article this week said if youā€™re still using slang like ā€œYOLOā€, ā€œvibeā€, or ā€œon pointā€, then youā€™re ā€œofficially old.ā€ Apparently weā€™re supposed to say ā€œtype beatā€ instead of ā€œvibe.ā€ I think Iā€™d rather just be called old.

In todayā€™s Naptown Scoop:

  • Public school lax playoffs šŸ„Ā

  • Rotary Crab Feast šŸ¦€Ā

  • New interactive Black history map šŸ—ŗļøĀ

Letā€™s get to it.

ā€” Lauren Burke Meyer, Dylan Roche, & Ryan Sneddon

We get by with a little help from our friends šŸ©ø

And by friends, we mean people who donate blood. Did you know the Anne Arundel Medical Centerā€™s blood bank supports 3,000 people every year? But. . . there is a critical shortage right now so they need some friends. Thatā€™s why weā€™re hosting a blood drive at Always Ice Cream Company in West Annapolis on May 17. Donating takes about 20 minutes and could save up to three lives. Iā€™m not great at math, but thatā€™s a good lives saved to time spent ratio. Click here to grab a spot.

Oh, and everyone who donates gets a scoop of ice cream and a $10 Chessieā€™s Wharf gift card. Thanks to the Cohen family (Always Ice Cream) and Chris Brohawn (Chessieā€™s Wharf) for helping us out here.

Double-sided water views

Views are the most important part of waterfront homes. This home nails it. Panoramic views from almost every room, unobstructed creek sunsets, even a 3rd floor lookout tower! Itā€™s not often you find water views from the back and front.

And itā€™s not just a phenomenal location. Itā€™s a phenomenal home too! The spacious open floor plan flows graciously from gourmet kitchen to living room to great room to outside.

Rounding out the main floor is an office, cozy guest room, and a wet bar. Upstairs, the primary bedroom has a massive bathroom and matching views. And the other bedroom enjoys practically the same views.

Outside, thereā€™s a lovely waterfront patio with a firepit. And just steps out the front door thereā€™s a private, completely protected, deep water pier already equipped with a boat lift and jet ski lift.

THE DIGEST

New map highlights local Black history šŸ—ŗ

Youā€™re probably already familiar with Carrā€™s Beach and Elktonia Beach as famous Black beaches during the mid-20th century. But did you know Sandy Point once had a segregated East Beach? Or do you know the significance of Whitehall Manor? Hereā€™s your chance to learn.

Blacks of the Chesapeake teamed up with the Chesapeake Conservancy to create an interactive digital map of the entire Chesapeake watershed that tells the stories of our regionā€™s Black history. At least 7 are in the greater Annapolis area, but some go as far as New York! Check it out.

Chromebook Giveaway šŸ’»

Tech ainā€™t cheap. Thankfully, AACPL is committed to closing the digital divide. And their Chromebook Giveaway times well with AACPSā€™ policy change where taking school-issued Chromebooks home isnā€™t the default. The next giveaway is May 16 from 1ā€“4 PM at the Busch Annapolis Library on West Street. Only a few spots remain, so register here or spread the word to those who may be eligible.

WHATā€™S HAPPENINā€™

Herndon Climb

Itā€™s never easy being a college freshman. But itā€™s definitely not easy being a plebe at the Naval Academy. Their first year is brutal. But luckily, its symbolic end is almost here. The Class of 2027 will complete the Herndon Monument Climb on Wednesday, May 15 at 8 AM. Thatā€™s when the plebes work together (kind of) to climb a 21-foot stone obelisk covered in lard with one goal: replace the plebe ā€œdixie cupā€ hat with an upperclassmanā€™s cover. Once they do, they are no longer plebes.

The Herndon Climb is open to the (patient) public; it can take them as long as four hours. Enter through Gate 1 and head towards the Chapel. The iconic event will also be livestreamed on YouTube.

Tix now available: Rotary Crab Feast šŸ¦€

Whatā€™s the best part about going to someone elseā€™s crab feast? You donā€™t have clean up. You donā€™t have to set up. You donā€™t have to do anything but eat crabs. Lots of crabs. All the crabs you want. The Rotary Crab Feast, one of Annapolisā€™ most popular annual events, returns on August 2 to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. More than 1,000 guests are expected, so donā€™t wait to get your tickets.

Nothing in this section is sponsored. They're just the things you need to know. I'll always let you know when something's sponsored.

50 years of the William Paca Garden šŸŽ‰šŸŒ·

Wait. Wasnā€™t the Paca House built in the 1760s? Yes, but. . . At one point, the garden was almost lost forever to a hotel and parking lot. Historic Annapolis (HA) lovingly restored it in the 1970s and has stewarded it ever since. This weekend, HAā€™s Plant Sale will ensure they can continue critical preservation of Annapolisā€™ history. And hereā€™s a secret, HA members get early access on Saturday at 9:30 am and a 10% discount. Itā€™s worth joining for that alone! Click here for more info.*

SPORTS

The state of public school lax playoffs šŸ„

This former Falcon laxer is feeling proud. Severna Park girls lax beat their rival Broadneck 13ā€“9 to three-peat the county championship on MondayĀ ā€“ their 14th since 2000. And championships arenā€™t the only things coming in threes. Maria Bragg, Francesca Dunoyer, and ErinĀ Hussey each notched hat tricks for the Falcons.

Severna Parkā€™s boys also beat Broadneck for the county championship on Monday, winning 6ā€“5. This feels extra nice not just because itā€™s the Falconsā€™ 15th title since 2000, but because it avenges last seasonā€™s title loss to Broadneck. ā€“LBMĀ šŸ’™šŸ’›

Now the county championships are decided, itā€™s on to regionals.

  • Boys 3A: South River faces Arundel. Severna Park awaits the winner.

  • Girls 3A: South River faces Oxon Hill. Defending champ Severna Park has a bye and awaits the winner.

  • 4A

    • Girls: Defending champion Broadneck hosts Annapolis High.

    • Boys: Annapolis hosts defending champion Broadneck.
