Captain’s Daughter Opens at The Westin, Pip’s Dock Street Dogs Turns 16, Annapolis Blues Playoffs...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Just got the forecast for the rest of the week. It calls for a 100% chance of burnt hot dogs, big booms, and that one guy in the homemade tank top yelling “MERICA” way too loud.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Captain’s Daughter Opens at The Westin

  • Pip’s Dock Street Dogs Turns 16

  • Annapolis Blues Playoffs

Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST

Checking in on our Annapolis Blues ⚽️💙

The undefeated Annapolis Blues Women are scoring big in their rookie season. They clinched the Chesapeake Division title and earned home pitch advantage in the Eastern Conference Playoffs. Which starts tomorrow, Thursday (July 3), at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:30 PM. Be part of this historic season and get tickets!

Meanwhile, the Blues Men netted a weekend win but face an uphill battle to crack their division’s top two spots and stay in play for the postseason. Their jump to USL League 2 has been tough this season. All three remaining matches are must-win but the July 9 away match against first-place Northern Virginia FC is critical. Score tickets to their last two home games of the season on 7/6 and 7/12.

Dog of the Week: Meet Waylon 🐾

Look at that smile! 😍 Somebody is cheesin’ real hard, and his name is Waylon. He’s a 5-(almost 6)-year-old Jack Russell mix who loves attention (that explains the big smile). But even though he looks pretty happy in these pics, he feels a little nervous in his new space at the SPCA, though he warms up to people pretty quickly and will offer butt wiggles as a show of affection — something we have a feeling means more coming from Waylon than it would coming from one of us.

Waylon’s a relative newcomer to the SPCA, having arrived on April 29. It’s worth a heads up that the status of his housetraining is unknown and he doesn’t do well with small kids, so he’ll need to find a loving human who can give him the patience and space he needs.

Sediment Spill at City Dock Construction Site

It’s not uncommon to see standing water in the area of City Dock, but recently a local business owner noticed that the extensive rains were threatening to wash sediment from the City Dock project into storm drains leading to Spa Creek. Sveinn Storm, owner of Storm Brothers Ice Cream shop, said he was surprised to see the amount of sediment in the standing water that encompassed all of Dock Street.

De-watering wells were in the process of being installed earlier that weekend, but the City brought in a vacuum truck to take care of the water within hours. The good news is that the MD Dept. of the Environment said that none of the brown water entered Spa Creek, but they’re continuing to monitor the issue. The City Dock Expansion project is still in the early stages, with full-onconstruction set to begin in October. ($)

LOCAL BUSINESS

Captain’s Daughter Opens in The Westin 🍽️

“Timeless naval tradition meets modern coastal cuisine” is the kind of phrase that gets pretty much every Annapolitan restaurant-goer’s attention. And it’s how Fred Malek, owner of Captain’s Daughter, describes the new dining spot recently opened in The Westin on Westgate Circle. Captain’s Daughter is reel serious about seafood, particularly crab (we expect nothing less) and craft cocktails. You don’t even have to be staying at The Westin to dine there — and because there’s still not that much info out about this new place, going there and seeing it for yourself might be the best way of seeing what it’s all about.

Pip’s Dock Street Dogs Celebrates its Sweet Relish 16

We remember when they opened, which likely means we should be applying Retinol to the corners of our eyes. But congratulations on 16 delicious years to Pip’s Dock Street Dogs, one of our favorite local establishments and the best place by far to get a hot dog. Hm. Now we’re craving an all-beef Nathan’s dog smothered in sauerkraut and mustard. What are y’all doing for lunch?

P.S. Don’t sleep on the cheesesteaks. Pip’s ain’t a one-trick frankfurter pony.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Your Fourth of July survival kit

We love this holiday, but to celebrate properly, you need some local insights.

Fireworks! đŸŽ† đŸŽ‡ July 3: Sherwood Forest lights up the night
Get on a boat and make your way up the Severn for this spectacular light display.

July 4: Annapolis Harbor goes Boom
The show starts a little after 9 PM, but you’ll want to get there earlier to avoid crowds, get a good spot, and of course, watch the parade.

All county and federal offices have the Fourth off. This also means trash collectors get the day off, as well. If your regular day is Thursday or Friday, check the schedule here.

And, hey. Fireworks are fun until they aren’t. Take a second and read up on Fireworks Safety and know the rules and regulations if you’re going to be handling them on your own.

I love a parade! Just a warning: if you see Ryan this week, he’s going to tell you just how much the Severna Park Parade kicks Annapolis’ butt. The guy has pretty good taste in things, though, so take his advice and check it out between 10 AM and noon.

Then you can decide for yourself because you have plenty of time to see both. The Annapolis Parade will be kicking things off before the fireworks show at 6:30 PM.

Then tag us on Instagram (@naptownscoop) and tell us what you think: which parade takes the cake?

Whatever you do, stay local. The pros on the Bay Bridge have asked us to mention that traffic can be a little extra on the 4th. So if you’re going to need to be crossing over to either shore, plan on going either earlier or later so that you don’t end up missing the holiday due to traffic.

Happy Fourth, readers!

All-County tennis and players/coach of the year 🎾

It’s time to make a racket about the 2025 Capital Gazette tennis Players of the Year: Broadneck senior Olivia Mellynchuk and Key School junior Morgan Schaefer. Mellynchuk ended a dominant career as a four-time girls Player of the Year, leading the Bruins to three straight state crowns. She’ll continue her tennis career at Army. Schaefer went 16–1 en route to the MIAA B No. 2 singles title. His coach — William Rogers — won Coach of the Year, garnering a 6–1 regular-season record for Key, which defeated every other Anne Arundel County private school.

The All-County team includes Broadneck (4A state champs three years running), Severna Park (Class 3A bronze), and Key (MIAA B standouts). ($)
