🍦Who should open Let's Go Music Festival?

Rotary college scholarship, faith at the Annapolis Film Festival, a conversation with former Mayor Ellen Moyer...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. This is such a great town. It’s like a Norman Rockwell painting put on a pair of Sperrys and joined the Navy. We’ve got sailboats gliding around like figure skaters on the Chesapeake, and crabcakes so good they can make a grown man cry. We’ve seen it.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Four college scholarships up for grabs

  • Faith at the Film Festival

  • A conversation with former Mayor Ellen Moyer

Let’s get to it.

Waterfront on Spa Creek – A Rare Downtown Annapolis Treat

This one’s special. Waterfront homes on Spa Creek only come on the market once in a blue moon.

Located in the heart of downtown Annapolis, 9 Shipwright offers front-row views of Spa Creek and Eastport, a private deep-water pier, and multiple outdoor spaces including a rooftop deck made for sailboat races, the Blue Angels, and sunset cocktails.

With 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, and a perfect blend of historic charm and modern updates, this home is designed for both everyday comfort and unforgettable entertaining. The walkout lower level offers extra space for guests, while the main level shines with a gourmet kitchen and sunlit gathering spaces.

This is walkable coastal living at its finest. Don’t miss your chance to own a piece of Spa Creek. Contact Brad Kappel today to schedule your private showing.

THE DIGEST

An interview with the Annapolis Film Festival’s biggest supporter

The Annapolis Film Festival is one area where our little town really punches out of its weight class. If you haven’t been, we can’t recommend it enough, even for just one movie. We recently caught up with Brian Giese of the Brian and Patricia Giese Foundation to talk about something new for this year, the Faith Experience. Brian shared how the idea came up, how he and Patty view their foundation’s work, and lots more.

P.S. The film festival starts tomorrow so grab your tickets or passes now!

Western Shore Veterinary Hospital offers your pets the finest wellness care, state-of-the-art diagnostics, dental treatment, and surgery ranging from spays/neuters to sophisticated treatments. You can find them online, by phone at 443-936-0660, or at 910C Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Dog of the Week: Meet Woody 🤠 🐾

I mean, that face. And those ears. Come on. To know Woody is to love him. The four-year-old Chinese Shar-Pei/Mix came to the shelter after his beloved owner became very ill. Woody is an “experienced best friend” and happiest hanging out on a couch together (maybe watching Toy Story?!). Let’s just say he might just be the new partner for you! Find him at Wing 1 of the SPCA, 1815 bay ridge avenue, Annapolis, MD 21403.

Community Scoop: A Conversation with Former Mayor Ellen Moyer

In the second-ever episode of Community Scoop, hosts Jared Littmann and Vincent Moulden sat down with Ellen O. Moyer – the first female mayor of Annapolis. From her groundbreaking election to her enduring legacy in environmental advocacy, historic preservation, and the arts, Moyer shares stories from her time in office and reflects on the moments that defined her leadership. She opens up about the challenges she faced as a woman in politics, what kept her motivated, and how Annapolis has evolved since her tenure. This candid and inspiring conversation is a must-listen for anyone who cares about leadership, legacy, and the future of our capital city. Watch now.

Who needs some cash for college? Asking for a friend. . .

And that friend is the Rotary Club of Annapolis. They’ve got four $2,500 scholarships for graduating seniors this year. Here’s who’s eligible:

🎓 You must demonstrate a commitment to community service in keeping with Rotary ideals

There are a few more qualifications which can be found here along with the application. And speaking of applications, they must be postmarked by April 11.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Denim & Diamonds tickets now on sale 👖💎

One of the biggest fundraising affairs of the season is almost here. Denim & Diamonds, Anne Arundel Medical Foundation’s signature event benefitting pediatric mental health, returns for the first time in six years on April 26 on the hospital’s South Campus. It’s an evening of drinks, food, live music, raffles, games, denim (of course), and much more. Most of the invite list comprises event sponsors, but a limited number of tickets go on sale starting today, so if you want to be part of the mirth (and the mission), don’t wait to buy yours.

You choose the opener 🗳️

We’ve still got a little more than 2 months until the Let’s Go Music Festival brings a bunch of big-name artists to Annapolis. But tickets are already on sale for the June 6–7 event at Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds and the lineup has been announced. Even cooler though is the fact that you get to choose the band that opens the Main Stage (well, you and everyone else who votes). The second round of voting for the opener is underway here, and you can choose from the contenders HydraFX, SMANTX, Second Place, lolitslea, Doll Apartments, b.en and the b.and, Free Friends, and Callum.

CIVIL NEWS

Meet Matthew Flinner

Annapolis has a new director of Central Services — specifically because Annapolis now has a Central Services Department for the first time in nearly 15 years. Matthew Flinner comes to Annapolis from Pennsylvania’s Department of General Services, where he served as Chief of Staff, and he’ll now head up a city department that has been reconstituted after shuttering in 2011. The City of Annapolis voted on legislation to bring Central Services back in summer 2024 and confirmed Matthew’s hiring on Monday.

So what does Central Services do? Purchasing, procurement, facilities management, and fleet operations. Matthew starts work April 10. Welcome to Annapolis, Director Flinner!

NCAA tables Army & Navy’s request for a 13th game 🏈

Navy and archrival Army both want to play another game this season. Every other team gets to play 12 games before the playoff selections. Army & Navy’s final game (which is against each other) is after. So they for an additional game, arguing that every other team gets 12 chances to be judged by the playoff committee while they get 11. But, the NCAA Football Oversight Committee doesn’t feel change is necessary and denied the request without providing a reason.

Does one game really matter? Navy Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk – who just finished a stint on the playoff selection committee – says absolutely. Oh well, we love an underdog. And if anyone’s tough enough to power through some adversity, it’s our boys at Navy. ($)
