🍦Who's headlining Bands in the Sand?

Public housing plans, Green Beer Races, Hockey for Heroes...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Sorry for any confusion we caused yesterday. Navy is playing Notre Dame at MetLife Stadium and Army at FedEx Field in 2024. We (and by that I mean I) wrote it the other way around. Thanks to everyone who caught it. We’re slowly sending individual thank you notes. It’s a long list.

Let’s get to it.

Who’s headlining Bands in the Sand?

Bands in the Sand 2023

On September 1, 2023, the world lost a legend. Nobody wrote better boating music. Nobody wrote better vacation music. Or music for imagining you were on vacation. I of course mean Jimmy Buffett. And since Annapolis is full of Parrotheads, including some who called Jimmy a friend, it’s only right that this year’s Bands in the Sand headliner is. . . .

The Landsharks Band 🦈

AKA the premier Jimmy Buffett tribute band. Jimmy hired The Landsharks as the house band at Margaritaville and once said they knew his songs better than him. They’ve played with The Beach Boys, Bob Marley’s Wailers, and of course, Bubba himself.

Misspent Youth and Jah Works will open for the Landsharks. VIP and Committee tickets launch tomorrow at 9 AM. GA tickets launch May 1 at 9 AM.

What’s this? Bands in the Sand is an awesome outdoor fundraiser for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation on June 8, 2024. Last year it raised over $500k for CBF.

“Oil” see you in court

The lawsuit involving Annapolis and AA County vs. 26 big-name oil and gas companies (think Exxon Mobile and BP) is heading to state court, not federal. That appears to be good news for Annapolis because Big Oil was seeking a federal hearing. Annapolis sued back in 2021, saying these companies violated Maryland law and directly contributed to climate change. Although the defendants pushed for a federal hearing, the case heads to the Anne Arundel Circuit Court on Friday. ($)

Big plans for public housing

Annapolis public housing could be about to transform. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development approved a redevelopment plan for Harbour House and Eastport Terrace. Among the plans: Doubling the number of homes, mixed-use spaces, accessibility improvements, and green spaces.

The next step is grant seeking. The housing authority will first go through the Choice Neighborhood Planning Grant Initiative, which funded the new plan. On the other side, Annapolis will solicit developers. ($)
