Good morning, Annapolis. That whole “only eat oysters during months that end in R” is just Big Shrimp propaganda. Thanks to modern refrigeration, it’s totally safe to eat oysters in the summer. So much so that this week is National Oyster Week. Head to your choice of Annapolis’ participating restaurants to grab a dozen and a local beer!

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Drum show at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium

  • Last call for Rotary Crab Feast

  • Navy baseball’s new director of operations

Let’s get to it.

SPONSORED BY MURTHY FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY

Dr. Namita Murthy is pleased to introduce FaceTite. In fact, she’s the only plastic surgeon in Annapolis offering FaceTite. So, what is FaceTite?

Think of FaceTite like a facelift without big incisions.

For a normal facelift, Dr. Murthy cuts in the hairline near your temple and around your ear to the lower scalp. She redistributes fat and tissue, redrapes the skin, and trims the excess. Very safe, but still a major surgery.

With FaceTite, Dr. Murthy makes a series of pinhole incisions – so small they don’t even need stitches. She first removes any excess fat and then uses radiofrequency waves (which also stimulate collagen production) to tighten and remodel skin. It’s done under local anesthesia with minimal recovery time.

FaceTite is a major breakthrough in facial contouring. Nothing else this minimally invasive even comes close to matching facelift results the way FaceTite does.

If your face and neck aren’t as tight as you’d like, schedule a comfortable and personalized consultation with Dr. Murthy today.

Also follow Dr. Murthy on Instagram @drnamitamurthy for more information and future specials!

THE DIGEST

It’s hot 🥵

The above sentence is a top pick for understatement of the year (right alongside “Elon Musk has gone off his rocker.”) In fact it’s so hot that Annapolis opened up its cooling centers for the first time of the summer. The primary cooling center is at the Pip Moyer Recreation Center but there are others at the Michael E. Busch Library and the Annapolis Senior Activity Center. Call 410-216-9167 to find out if these are open.

Side note: The Harbormaster’s pumpout boat doesn’t operate when the heat index is over 100ºF.

Who’s running the Naval Academy?

Rear Admiral Yvette Davids was supposed to take charge of the Naval Academy this month as Vice Admiral Sean Buck retired from the Navy. However, an Alabama football coach turned Senator is holding up Davids’ promotion and 270 others in protest of military abortion policies. Despite reports that Rear Admiral Fred Kacher is acting Superintendent, USNA Public Affairs told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that Admiral Buck is still running the show and will until September.

As it stands, Davids and Buck are both stuck. She can’t take over the Academy and Buck can’t fully pursue his next role – rumored to be president of Florida Atlantic University. ($)

Fun fact: Yvette Davids’ husband is also a Rear Admiral, making them the only dual-admiral couple in the entire Navy. Talk about a power couple.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Beware of Brown Paper Tickets

Thousands of small businesses and nonprofit organizations around the country trusted a company called Brown Paper Tickets (BPT) to sell tickets online for events over the last couple years. Unfortunately, BPT has not been releasing payments to many of these organizations. Patrick Newman and his wife, owners of the Newman Dance Center, recently used BPT for their dance recital. Months later, BPT still owes the Newmans over ten thousand dollars. In 2022, Washington State ordered BPT to pay $9 million in back payments to organizations. Reports show BPT has paid 7 of the 9 million ordered.

So word of warning to any would-be event hosts reading Scoop, beware of Brown Paper Tickets. We use Eventbrite for our Annual Party and the only way we’d be happier with the product is if you bought all the remaining tickets (15) today.

SPONSORED BY WESTERN SHORE VETERINARY HOSPITAL

Pet care first 🐾

Almost all vets between Edgewater and Bay Bridge are owned by corporate companies and they are so busy they can’t take any new clients.

Western Shore Veterinary Hospital is privately owned and the veterinarians and staff live in the area. You’ll see them in the exam room and on the lacrosse field sidelines.

At Western Shore, client satisfaction is second. But that’s only because pet care is first.

Western Shore Veterinary Hospital is excited to bring the same great pet care to Annapolis that they've been providing on the Eastern Shore for over 30 years.

CIVIL NEWS

City Attorney not changing jobs

I hope nobody was eyeing up D. Michael Lyles’ desk at City Hall. Lyles announced two weeks ago that he was leaving the city’s employ to run Maryland’s Attorney Grievance Commission. That’s the group that investigates alleged ethical lapses by attorneys. Lyles was one of two final candidates for the job but it appears neither one was confirmed. No harm, no foul for Lyles. He’ll stay on as the City Attorney. ($)

AACPS moves forward with Blueprint for Maryland’s Future plan

The Blueprint for Maryland's Future board gave a green light to AACPS’ implementation plan last week 🚥 The Blueprint is a 5-pillar plan to increase equity across the state’s public education. AACPS has been planning and taking public input for months for how it’ll fit into it. Now, AACPS will roll out measures like monitoring tools for college readiness, salary scales for teacher compensation, expanded pre-k opportunities, and more. Read the implementation plan.

Navy hires new direction of operations for baseball ⚾️

Navy’s new baseball coach Chuck Ristano announced Courtney Caswell as the program’s new director of operations this week. Courtney comes to Annapolis after spending the last four seasons in several different roles – including some alongside Coach Ristano. As a native of Florida who stayed for a bachelor’s and a master’s degree, she’s probably wondering why we all complained last week. Editor’s note: Just checked the weather in Tallahassee. 100ºF at 4:30 PM. No thanks 🙅‍♂️
