Community reinvestment and repair grant, Bay Bridge Boat Show, Volunteers needed...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Maryland lawmakers used the final minutes of the legislative session to make the Orange Crush our official state cocktail. And even though we invented it (Ocean City circa summer 1995), we weren’t the first to elevate it to state cocktail status. Delaware beat us to the punch last year.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Community reinvestment and repair grant

  • Bay Bridge Boat Show

  • Volunteers needed: 0.05K Bridge Run

Let’s get to it.

Brad Kappel’s Home of the Week: Rare Opportunity on Iconic Spa Creek

Annapolis waterfront living doesn’t get much better than this.

Set along Annapolis’ beloved Spa Creek, this custom-built, 5-bedroom, 4-bath home was designed for those who expect the best. With over 4,500 sq ft of living space, 12-foot ceilings, panoramic water views, and meticulous craftsmanship throughout, every inch of this home feels exceptional.

An open floor plan encourages seamless indoor/outdoor living, flowing from the sunlit interior to the expansive ipe deck, stone patio, lush backyard, and private deep-water pier. Take a water taxi from your dock straight into downtown Annapolis or launch your own boat to explore the Chesapeake Bay.

Whether it’s sunrise coffee on the balcony or sunset cocktails by the water, life here is pure Annapolis charm.

THE DIGEST

Western Shore Veterinary Hospital offers your pets the finest wellness care, state-of-the-art diagnostics, dental treatment, and surgery ranging from spays/neuters to sophisticated treatments. You can find them online, by phone at 443-936-0660, or at 910C Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Dog of the Week: Hellooooo, Abraham!

Look at that terrier with its cute little derriere! Ok, so he would definitely tell me that doesn’t rhyme and that I should do better. This chunk-o-spunk is a nine-year old terrier mix who is personable and smart, but also stubborn. Like your favorite grandpa in a 18-pound body. And just like your pop-pop, his favorite activities are sitting on the couch with you eating snacks and barking at people who step on your lawn.

He’s a homebody and likes things just so, and he might have some choice words about that putz you’re dating. But he’s affectionate and loyal and has quite possibly the cutest little tail wag we’ve ever seen. Put him in a bow tie and watch him stop traffic: this pup gets attention like he’s got warm Werther’s Originals in his pocket, so stop wasting time and bring this little old man home.

Does your nonprofit need some profits?

Silly question. The answer’s always yes. When Maryland passed the Cannabis Reform Act in 2022, they not only legalized marijuana for adult use: they created the Community Reinvestment and Repair Fund which earmarks a portion of cannabis tax revenue for community reinvestment. Now, those communities most impacted by the criminalization of cannabis can seek grants to repair and rebuild. Grants range from $20,000 to $100,000 and must address one of the following issues:

  • Mental health and substance abuse services

  • Education, youth enrichment, and after-school activities

  • Housing and homelessness prevention

  • Workforce development and employment training

Volunteers Needed: 0.05K Bridge Run 🏃🏻‍♂️

Nope, that’s not a typo. The annual 0.05K Run is an actual run across the Eastport Bridge. This year, it’s on May 10 at the crack of noon. And as you can imagine, it takes a lot of volunteer support for the runners to sustain that long distance. (No, seriously. Volunteers really are necessary to pull this kind of event off.) Volunteers help set up, hand out T-shirts, check in registrants, run the hydration stations, and much more. Sign up for a volunteer slot. The distance might not be that serious, but it’s a full day of celebrating and funds raised always support local charities.

CIVIL NEWS

AACPS inches toward fewer early dismissals

In a move that will likely have working parents shouting “hallelujah,” AACPS has moved one step closer toward reducing the number of early dismissals each year. A bill granting an exception to the required 180-day school year passed the Maryland General Assembly on Saturday, and now heads to Governor Moore’s desk. The school district uses the early dismissal days for professional development and extra grading, but the days have proven problematic with teachers, families, and employees: attendance drops on early dismissal days, leaving teachers struggling with effective lesson plans, while families scramble to find childcare.

IMPORTANT: This bill grants AACPS an exception to the education day requirement. There’s also an hour requirement AACPS will still meet. ($)
