ASO's new CEO, high school boys lax preview, how's our economy...

Good morning, Annapolis. There will be no Scoop on Monday so our team can spend all day Sunday with their families. Happy Easter to those who celebrate! ✝️

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • High school boys lax season preview

  • How’s our economy?

  • Liquor license rules

Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST

ASO welcomes new CEO

There’s a big new name at the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. The board of trustees recently appointed Dr. Ralph Kuncl as CEO. Dr. Kuncl brings lots of experience from his career at leading research universities, colleges, and nonprofits. He’s widely known in the science community for studying ALS (remember the ice bucket challenge?) at Johns Hopkins University.

He’s also quite the musician. Dr. Kuncl was influential in the growth of California’s second oldest Conservatory of Music as president of the University of Redlands. Closer to home, he performed with the Baltimore Symphony and Washington National Symphony.

Publisher’s note: Ralph (as I call him) also wrote the Naptown Scoop style guide that helps us write these emails in the fun way you’ve come to know and love. Congratulations on the new job!

Will I see the solar eclipse in Annapolis?

Yes but. . .

We won’t be in the epically named path of totality. Only about 87% of our sun will disappear on April 8. Use NASA’s Eclipse Explorer to see exactly when it will happen. If you want the full experience, check these places out:

  • Kerrville, TX. You’ll get 4 minutes and 24 seconds of totality – the longest in the US that’s easy to get to. Fly to San Antonio.

  • Niagra Falls, NY. Only 3 minutes and 31 seconds of totality but how epic. . .

  • Nazas, Durango, Mexico. This is where you’ll get absolute max totality. A whopping 4 more seconds than Kerrville.

Want to sell beer even if you don’t live here? 🍺

Not a resident? Then you’re not selling alcohol. As Annapolis law currently stands, you need to live in the city if you’re trying to get a liquor license. But now the Annapolis City Council is saying, “Let’s rethink this.” It comes after AG Anthony Brown said a law like this goes against the US Constitution’s Commerce Clause. If this legislation passes, Annapolis will allow non-city residents to obtain liquor licenses, consistent with Maryland law and U.S. law. ($)
