Dog of the Week: Meet Charlie Rex 🐾

Don’t put our boy Charlie Rex out to pasture just yet. Sure he’s 9 years old . . . but that Gene Simmons tongue is giving us “party every day” vibes. 🎸 Even at his age, this guy loves walks and playing with his favorite toys outside. And, you can definitely teach this old dog new tricks. All in all, he’s a great companion. A few notes on this Terrier/Pit Bull/Shepherd mix: he’ll do best as the only dog in the home and is better suited around older children. He’s been hanging out at the SPCA of Annapolis since late March. Make him yours today!

Oyster populations are growing 🦪

We’re going to guess you don’t spend much time thinking about oyster reproduction. But guess what. Those oysters in the Chesapeake Bay are reproducing — and they’re doing a lot of it, according to DNR’s Fall Oyster Survey. If we want to get specific, reproductive success and potential population growth have been above the median for 5 years now. When you consider the fact that an adult oyster can filter 50 gallons of water a day, this is a great thing for the health of our waterways.

Coren Makell joins City Council race 🗳️

There’s another name in the City Council District 4 race. Democrat Coren Makell is preparing to run for the seat currently held by alderwoman Sheila Finlayson, who’s retiring this fall, and will launch her campaign June 7 at the Boys & Girls Club in Annapolis. The former community engagement specialist for Mayor Gavin Buckley’s violence prevention NO HARM initiative plans to make affordable housing and improved living conditions for underserved communities a central focus of her campaign. She’ll be up against fellow Democrat Janice Allusp-Johnson. ($)

LOCAL BUSINESS

Lucky Knot Men’s Store coming soon 👕

You could be forgiven for thinking of The Lucky Knot as a women’s shop — the coastal preppy boutique caters mostly to female clientele. But they also carry several lines of menswear, including Peter Millar, Southern Tide, and Holebrook. Now might be an especially lucky time for any guys out there looking to take advantage of those Lucky Knot options, because a new men’s store is slated to open at 159 Main Street, just a few stores away from The Lucky Knot’s primary downtown location. The official opening date is TBA but we’ll let you know when we know more.

Giolitti reopens 🧀

Giolitti Deli took many regular customers by surprise when they closed unexpectedly last month without word on when they’d reopen. But as of Monday, the Italian market and delicatessen is officially back open and serving up all its favorite fare. There’s no official word about why they closed, but it’s hard to worry too much when you’re enjoying a delicious sandwich or pasta, right?

Step In. Feel Welcome. Belong.

Does your child hop out of the car and skip inside to school? While this might not seem like an important part of your child’s day, do not underestimate the importance of how your child is welcomed to school each day. A welcoming community creates a sense of belonging which fosters a love of learning. And research shows that a love of learning is crucial for long-term success including career advancement, personal growth, and mental well-being. And high school is too late; developing a love of learning begins in elementary school. Investing in the foundation of your child’s educational journey will set them up for success in high school, college, and beyond. St. Anne’s School of Annapolis invests in the future of their students each morning as they are welcomed to school and learn to love learning. Curious to know how we do it? Come in for a tour; we know you’ll love what you learn, too!

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Will the Blue Angels fly today?

Photo: Navy Athletics

Nothing in Annapolis causes more conjecture than the Blue Angels. Will they move the dates if it rains? Will they fly twice on Tuesday? I’m not gonna lie to you. Today’s weather forecast is bad for air shows, boating, and anything happening outside except playing in puddles. But as I’m writing this at 9:59 PM on Tuesday, there’s been no change to the Blue Angels schedule. They’re doing everything they can to try to fly. The Naval Academy will provide updates to the schedule on this website and its social media pages by about 9 AM.

If the Blue Angels do fly (keep your fingers crossed), all spectating info (by land or by sea) is available here.

This summer’s outdoor concert series 🎶 😎

The weather is warm and the tunes are flowing through town. Yesterday, we talked about Maryland Hall’s Bloomhaven, the upgraded outdoor concert series featuring genre-bending performances, food, drinks, and summer evening vibes. While you need tickets to Bloomhaven, these other outdoor concert series are free!

This reminder is for us as much as you, but BYO blanket or chairs!

The Murph Challenge 🏃

There are many fallen heroes to be remembered on Memorial Day. But there’s one member of the Navy who’ll be remembered not only in Annapolis but also around the world. Lt. Michael Murphy, the first member of the Navy officer to be decorated with the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War after he died in Afghanistan in 2005. Fitness centers everywhere honor Murphy by challenging participants to a workout he created called the Murph Challenge:

  • 1-mile run

  • 100 pull-ups

  • 200 pushups

  • 300 squats

  • 1-mile run

All done wearing a weighted vest if you can swing it. Think you’re up for it? 12 Labours CrossFit (1789 McGuckian Street, Annapolis 21401) is hosting the Murph on Memorial Day with heats starting at 8 AM, and their neighbor Maxed Out Fitness (1833 George Ave, Suite 2, Annapolis 21401) will do it at 9 AM. Check with gyms for pre-registration details.

If you want to challenge yourself this Memorial Day, this is an incredibly special way to do it.
