Good morning, Annapolis. Today’s top story is heavy. Our hearts are with the families and friends of Nicholas Mireles, Mario Antonio Mireles Ruiz, and Christian Marlon Segovia as they grieve these losses.

Let’s get to it.

Neighborhood shooting rocks Annapolis

AP Photo/Brian Witte

Just before 8 PM on Sunday, Mario Mireles walked to his neighbor’s house to settle a parking dispute. He was hosting his brother’s birthday party and apparently someone was blocking a driveway.

The conversation with his neighbor, Charles Smith, got heated. It turned physical. Smith pulled a gun.

During a “tussle” over the weapon, Smith shot Mireles and Christian Marlon Segovia. He then retreated inside, grabbed a rifle, and fired at people trying to help the victims. Mireles and Segovia died, as did Nicholas Mireles, Mario’s father. ($)

Three other victims were taken to the hospital – two via airlift and one by ambulance. All are expected to survive.

When police arrived, Smith surrendered and they took him into custody. On Monday he was charged with:

  • 3 counts of second-degree murder

  • 3 counts of attempted second-degree murder

  • 3 counts of first-degree assault

  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime

Context: Smith’s attorney says he’s an Afghanistan veteran with PTSD. An Army spokesperson confirmed Smith’s service but had no record of a deployment. In 2012, Smith was charged in connection with a stabbing but acquitted at trial. Court records reveal tensions between the neighbors dating back to 2016. ($)

This is the most violent attack in Annapolis since the 2018 Capital Gazette shooting. Much like that, Annapolis PD stressed that this was not a random incident and there’s no danger to the public.

Designer’s Villa in Epping Forest

Escape with me. Down the Severn River to idyllic Epping Forest. Through the gates you’ll find this magnificent villa. Its 100-foot long ipe deck perched on a bluff overlooking the Severn is one of the most breathtaking views in Annapolis.

Inside, the unique architecture is airy and open – which makes for unparalleled river views from almost every room. And like the lush, green landscaping outside, this home’s got style inside. Makes sense, considering the owner is a nationally acclaimed designer. 334 Severn Road is a perfect union of wood, glass, and metal with stylish fixtures and top-tier finishes.

Epping Forest is a gated community with loads of amenities – deep water marina, clubhouse, beach, boat ramp, tennis courts, and loads of social clubs for kids and adults alike.

QUICK HITS

🚧 Hillman Garage reopens today

Question: When something’s rebuilt but not renamed, is it called a Grand Opening or a Grand Reopening? Regardless, the new Noah Hillman Parking Garage is done and opening today. It features 165 more spaces than its predecessor, gateless entry/exit, EV charging, bike racks, enough solar panels to power the entire garage, space count indicators, and more. Long story, short: It’s a sexy parking garage.

To celebrate the opening, there’s a party today from 4–6 PM with live music, giveaways, and pickleball demonstrations. Perhaps more interestingly, parking in the shiny new garage is free until June 20.
