TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Happy World Kindness Day. Every day should be World Kindness Day.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

Let’s get to it.

Big news: Scoop is judging the Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade

The Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade is one of Annapolis’ best holiday traditions. Dozens of boats deck the hulls with lights, trees, and all sorts of holiday cheer. Then the crews bundle up and cruise around Spa Creek for thousands of holly jolly spectators. I’m stoked to announce that I (Scoop publisher Ryan) am one of the judges for this year. I was supposed to judge back in 2021 but weather forced EYC to cancel so I’m eager to be a part of the action.

The parade is December 9 from 6–8 PM. 21 boats are already registered and it’s not too late to add yours. If you just want to watch, here’s all the info you need.

The cutest fun fact there ever was

Did you know St. Mary’s School has a support dog for its students? Her name is Biscuit. Whether they’re having a hard day, need a little distraction, or just want to play – Biscuit is there for all SAINTS ⚜️

It wouldn't be possible though without Western Shore Veterinary Hospital, Biscuit's official veterinarian. They give Biscuit the best care so she can give the students her best care. If it's good enough for St. Mary's, it's good enough for us. Click here to experience the Western Shore Veterinary Hospital difference.

THE DIGEST

Passing stopped buses = big fines

Let’s take a little Driver’s Ed quiz. There’s a school bus stopped ahead of you with red flashing lights. Do you:

A) stop and wait
B) ignore the signs and pass it like nothing’s wrong

If you picked A, congrats! Thousands of County drivers picked B this year. During AACPD’s first year of equipping school buses with cameras, it caught 18,000 drivers illegally passing. If the safety of kids doesn’t convince you, maybe the $250 fine (from the bus camera) or $570 fine will (if a police officer catches you).

Say it with us: Don’t pass school buses unless there is a physical median or barrier separating the lanes of the road.

Happy World Kindness Day 💐

In a world where you can be anything, why not be kind? In 2021, Dandelions Flower Stand owner Danie Minor took this mantra to heart and put bouquets at the “Be Kind” signs around Annapolis. No surprise – it brightened everyone’s day. The tradition continues today. If you find one of Danie’s bouquets at a “Be Kind” sign, it’s yours! There are over 10 around downtown Annapolis and Eastport. Make sure to share a photo with @dandelionsstand when you do. It’ll make Danie’s day and yours!

Oh, and don’t forget to pay it forward 😊

LOCAL BUSINESS

Maryland Avenue store burglarized

Belle Âme & Muse (66 Maryland Avenue) had a major burglary last week. Around 2 AM on November 9, a witness saw three people who appeared to have broken the front glass and were stealing merchandise. The owner estimates around $100k of inventory was stolen. If you have any information on the break-in, you can share an anonymous tip with Annapolis PD at (410) 280-CLUE. The boutique is closed for repairs in the meantime.

SPORTS

Navy dominates UAB

It was a bellwether day at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Rayuan Lane ran back a 97-yard pick six – the longest in stadium history. Xavier Arline threw the longest pass of his career – a 45-yard touchdown to Regis Velez (also the longest completion of his career). And even though the mids only led 10-6 going into the fourth quarter, they absolutely exploded to blow out a slightly favored UAB 31 to 6. With three games left and the Mids sitting at 4-5, bowl eligibility isn’t out of the question. Their next challenge is ECU this weekend at home.

One notable (excused) absence on Saturday? Senior kicker Evan Warren. He was in DC interviewing for a Rhodes Scholarship. 7 other midshipmen are also Rhodes finalists this year. No surprise there. Alongside names like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, USNA is one of the most prolific Rhodes Scholar-producing institutions in the country. ($)
