Annapolis sees worst flooding since Hurricane Isabel
Photo: James Ronayne
Tuesdayâs storm dumped several inches of rain, but it was the overnight high tide that really did the damage. Water levels reached 5.1 feet â the third highest NOAAâs ever recorded in Annapolis.
The only two higher readings are Hurricane Isabel (2003, 7.16 feet) and the 1933 Chesapeake-Potomac hurricane (6.17 feet).
City Dock is always a focal point during flooding. And rightly so, Storm Brothers Ice Cream Factory recorded 32 inches of water in the store at its high point after the power went out, rendering their pumps useless. Theyâll be closed âfor a few weeks.â Many other businesses along Dock Street are also shut down.
But many homes, especially waterfront homes, were affected too. When water levels near the level of docks, waves and sheer pressure can smash up docks like this one on the South River.

Residents and businesses who did sustain damage are asked to report it to Anne Arundel County and/or the City of Annapolis which helps both prepare for future events like this.

THE DIGEST
Pip Moyer Opens Doors for Displaced Light House Residents
You could say they saw fire and they saw rain. Fortunately, nobody was hurt on Tuesday night when a fire started at the Light House Shelter in Annapolis (yes, the night of the torrential downpour). The fire started with a faulty light fixture and had already gone out by the time firefighters arrived on the scene.
Unfortunately, the Annapolis Fire Department said the building couldnât be occupied until repairs and inspections were done. In the meantime, Rec & Parks opened up the gym at the Pip Moyer Center as an overnight stay for 44 of the 70 displaced shelter residents. The remaining 26 residents went to stay with friends or family. It was a wet night to be displaced, but even rain couldnât dampen Annapolisâ will to take care of its own.
